DURHAM, N.H. – University of New Hampshire men’s basketball head coach Bill Herrion and his staff have announced that Russell Graham (Norristown, Pa.) and Abby Kabba (Oklahoma City, Okla.) have signed National Letters of Intent to attend UNH and play basketball beginning in the fall of 2008.
     “We are very happy to sign both Abby and Russell,” Herrion said. “They fill two needs that we really needed to address with this recruiting class. Signing these two players is going to finally give us the depth that we need to move our program forward. Along with Brian Benson (Rochester, N.Y.), we feel really good about our recruiting class.”

WESTLAKE, Ohio
– The National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics recently announced that the University of New Hampshire ranks 81st out of 365 Division I schools in the NACDA Directors’ Cup standings at the end of the winter sport season.
     The Wildcats have amassed 162 points, including the 25 points they tallied during the fall season. The ski team, which stands 11th overall, provided 57 points, while the third-ranked women’s hockey team supplied 55 points and the ninth-ranked men’s hockey team kicked in another 25.

DURHAM, N.H. – CollegeHoops.net recently announced that freshman guard Alvin Abreu (Lynn, Mass.), of the University of New Hampshire men’s basketball team, has been named a CollegeHoops.net Honorable Mention Mid-Major All-Freshman.
     Abreu adds the honor to his America East All-Rookie Team selection, as well as the three America East Rookie of the Week awards he racked up over the course of the season (Dec. 10, Jan. 7, Feb. 25).

VESTAL, N.Y. – Senior forward Mike Christensen (Reston, Va.) posted his third double-double of the season with 20 points and 11 rebounds, and freshman guard Alvin Abreu (Lynn, Mass.) added 16 points and five rebounds, but the seventh-seeded University of New Hampshire men’s basketball team ended its season Saturday night, falling to the second-seeded University of Hartford, 68-65 in the quarterfinal game of the America East tournament at Binghamton University’s Events Center.
     The loss wraps up the Wildcats’ record at 9-20, including 6-10 in America East, while the Hawks improve to 17-15 overall with a 10-6 conference record and move on to Sunday’s semifinal round. The ‘Cats fall to 7-26 all-time in the tournament, including 1-3 against the Hawks. Head Coach Bill Herrion, whose 19 wins make him the all-time winningest coach in America East Championship history, loses to Hartford for the first time in the five games he has faced the Hawks in the tournament.

DURHAM, N.H. — The University of New Hampshire men's basketball team will take on the University of Hartford in the quarterfinal round of the America East tournament on Saturday, March 8 at 6 p.m. at the Events Center on the campus of Binghamton University in Vestal, N.Y. The Wildcats and Hawks hook up for the 49th time, including the fourth time in the America East tournament. Hartford leads the all-time series, 31-17, and has a 2-1 advantage in the three tournament games. The last 10 meetings have been pretty even, with each team winning five games. Each team has also played well on their home court. The Wildcats have won four straight against the Hawks at Lundholm Gymnasium, while the Hawks have won six straight over the ‘Cats at Chase Arena. Hartford has not won in Durham since an 85-58 win Jan. 28, 2004, and UNH has not won at Hartford since an 80-78 triumph Jan. 12, 2002. All three games that the two teams have played at neutral sites were tournament games, with the Wildcats winning the most recent matchup, a 66-62 victory in the quarterfinal round March 4, 2006 that put the ‘Cats into the semifinals for the first time since 1995 and just the fifth time overall. The two teams split the regular-season series this year, as they have done for the past four seasons.

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The America East conference announced Monday that senior forward Mike Christensen (Reston, Va.), of the University of New Hampshire men’s basketball team, was named America East Men’s Basketball Player of the Week for the week ending March 2.
    Christensen picks up his first Player of the Week award on the final week of his regular-season career. On top of it being Christensen’s first Player of the Week award during his time at UNH, it is also the first time a UNH player has received the accolade since Jermaine Anderson shared the award Jan. 21, 2007. Prior to that, Blagoj Janev (twice), Ronnie Davis and Ben Sturgill (twice) all shared the award on five separate weeks over the course of three seasons, making this the first outright Player of the Week award for the program since Marcus Bullock took home the honor Feb. 17, 2002.

– Senior Mike Christensen (Reston, Va.) scored 24 points and junior guard Tyrece Gibbs (Brockton, Mass.) added 19 to lead the University of New Hampshire men’s basketball team to Thursday night’s 68-65 win over the University of Vermont in the team’s regular season finale on Senior Day in front of a season-high 1,853 fans at Lundholm Gymnasium.
    The win, which snaps an eight-game losing streak against Vermont, closes out the Wildcats’ regular season record at 9-19, including 6-10 in America East. The Catamounts drop to 14-14 overall and 8-7 in the conference. The win marks the first for the Wildcats against Vermont since a 78-57 victory Feb. 21, 2004 at Lundholm.

The Wildcats and Catamounts meet for the 125th time ever, with Vermont leading the all-time series, 78-46. Vermont has won the last eight meetings between the two teams, including three straight at Lundholm. The last UNH win was a 78-57 victory Feb. 21, 2004 at Lundholm. In the most recent meeting, freshman guard Alvin Abreu scored 18 points and senior forward Mike Christensen added 17 points and a career-high 14 rebounds, but the Wildcats’ comeback fell just short as the Catamounts grabbed a 64-61 win Jan. 12 at Patrick Gymnasium.
