NEW ORLEANS – The University of New Hampshire women’s track and field team, as well as sophomore pole vaulter Rita Ciambra (Hanover, N.H.), were recently honored by the United States Track and Field Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) for their academic achievements during the 2008 season.
     UNH’s track and field team was one of 117 Division I women’s track and field programs recognized as a USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field Team. The Wildcats compiled a 3.18 team grade point average, well over the minimum 3.000 needed to qualify for the award.

UNH HONOR ROLL

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – A total of 201 University of New Hampshire student-athletes were named to the 2008 America East Winter/Spring Academic Honor Roll for recording a grade point average of 3.0 or above in that winter/spring semester, the league announced Thursday. Of the 201 honored, 113 of those were also named to the Commissioner’s Honor Roll for possessing a gpa of at least 3.5, the most of any of the other institution.
      In the nine-member America East conference, only Binghamton University (251 honorees) had a higher number of student-athletes recognized. The University at Albany (198), the University of Vermont (197) and Stony Brook University (188) rounded out the top five.

    The former University of New Hampshire athlete let the tears keep coming. These tears were tears of relief, tears of happiness, tears of joy. And anyway, she didn't need her eyes to see where she was going. She knew every step she took was one step closer to Beijing. Joanne (Duffley) Dow was going to the Olympics.
    On Sunday morning, the final day of the 2008 Olympic Trials in Eugene, Ore., on Dow's last chance to compete in an Olympic Games, she did exactly what she needed to do. Ten years after winning her first U.S. national title, Dow won her 10th, walking her way to Beijing.

CAMBRIDGE, MASS— Student-athletes at the University of New Hampshire continue to excel in the classroom and as a result the Wildcats finished second in the running for the 2007-08 America East Academic Cup with an impressive cumulative grade point average of 3.12.  UNH has won the Academic Cup twice, in 1998-99 and 1999-2000.
    The University of Vermont narrowly edged out UNH to take home the hardware with a 3.14 GPA.
    The University of Maine (3.10), Stony Brook University (3.06) and Binghamton University (3.04) were the other institutions in America East to compile grade point averages of 3.00 or better in 2007-08.

STANDINGS

WESTLAKE, Ohio – The National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics recently announced that the University of New Hampshire ranks 81st out of 365 Division I schools in the NACDA Directors’ Cup standings at the end of the winter sport season.
     The Wildcats have amassed 162 points, including the 25 points they tallied during the fall season. The ski team, which stands 11th overall, provided 57 points, while the third-ranked women’s hockey team supplied 55 points and the ninth-ranked men’s hockey team kicked in another 25.

DURHAM, N.H.—The University of New Hampshire athletic department continues to excel nationally in both athletics and academics. UNH student-athletes were acknowledged this week as eight teams were honored publicly by the NCAA for their high academic achievement.

The awards are based on the NCAA’s latest multiyear Academic Progress Rate (APR) scores that were released on Thursday. These teams posted multiyear APR scores in the top 10 percent of all squads nationally in their respective sports. The public recognition awards are part of the broad Division I academic reform effort.

RESULTS

BOSTON – Megan Hepp, a former member of the University of New Hampshire women’s cross country and indoor and outdoor track teams, finished in 12th place at the 2008 Women’s Olympic Marathon Trials in Boston on April 20.
     Hepp finished the 26.2-mile course in two hours, 37 minutes and 29 seconds and in the process, shaved eight minutes off her previous personal best. The race saw 124 women finish, with the top three awarded a spot on the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team.

RESULTS

BOSTON – Sophomore Rita Ciambra (Hanover, N.H.) led four top-10 finishers by setting a new school record for the University of New Hampshire women’s indoor track and field team, as it wrapped up its season at the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Championships on March 8 and 9 at the Reggie Lewis Center.
     Ciambra placed fifth in the pole vault, setting a new school record by clearing a height of 3.85 meters. Ciambra wraps up what Head Coach Robert Hoppler called “the greatest season ever by a UNH pole vaulter,” by recording a school-record leap for the sixth time this season. Ciambra, who won conference and New England titles in the pole vault this season, set a new school record Jan. 13 at the Dartmouth Relays, eclipsed the mark Jan. 25 at the Boston Indoor Games, tied the mark Feb. 14 at the URI Mega Meet and again Feb. 25 at the America East Championships and then broke the mark March 3 at the New England Championships before raising the bar again at the ECACs.

     Senior Jordan Horwitz (Evanston, Ill.) and sophomore Wesley Dinnan (Juneau, Alaska) were two of the 14 athletes from the men’s side to be honored based on their on and off the field success.
