WELCOME TO THE UNIVERSITY ATHLETIC LICENSING DEPARTMENT

The University of New Hampshire enjoys a rich heritage and is an outstanding institution of higher education, research, service and dedication to excellence.  Since its founding in 1866, the University of New Hampshire has developed and enriched the quality of life in the State of New Hampshire, around the country, and around the world.  The University is committed to all its programs, including the Athletics Licensing Program.

The University's students, alumni, faculty and staff, plus our many supporters share tradition, loyalty and spirit.  The support combined with the success of our athletic teams has created a demand for products that display our mark, symbols and insignia that are associated with the University.  Through our Athletic Licensing Program, we market and efficiently manage this demand by assuring that our marks appear only on quality products.

The Athletics Program has established a standard of excellence and a reputation that reaches far beyond the campus walls.  The University's Athletics "family" of logos symbolizes both the program's tradition and its future as a strong competitor in intercollegiate athletics.  The logos are designed for use on merchandise, player uniforms, publications, television and on the internet.  The "banners" in the logos allows each sport to customize its logo, while maintaining a consistent identity. 

WHY DOES UNH HAVE A LICENSING DEPARTMENT

The University established a licensing program in an effort to protect and control the University's trademarks and to maximize the exposure that the University receives through the sale of merchandise to consumers in the retail marketplace.

The University has partnered with the Collegiate Licensing Company (CLC), the largest collegiate trademark licensing company in the country, to manage and maximize its licensing program.  The Athletics Department oversees the University's contract with CLC and every day management of the program.

WHAT DOES ATHLETIC LICENSING ACCOMPLISH?

Athletic Licensing promotes and protects our logos and marks.  It also creates a cooperative and positive working relationship with licensees (manufacturers of products) and retailers.  Fans of the collegiate arena and of the University of New Hampshire have come to recognize our trademark and look for the "officially licensed" products label on merchandise.  The label assures the purchaser that he or she is buying from an official licensee and a percentage of the proceeds are going back to the University of New Hampshire.

Athletic Licensing also monitors and generates growth for Wildcats merchandise not just in the state of New Hampshire, but throughout the country and even internationally.

WHO NEEDS A LICENSE?

Any manufacturer merchandising product bearing or making reference to the UNH's logos and marks.  The manufacturer must have a license before offering products for sale.

All vendors that use the University's trademark on merchandise (including t-shirts, caps, and all other saleable products) must be licensed.  Vendors are required to obtain approval through the licensing program on all designs and products that are produced bearing UNH trademarks.  Vendors support UNH by adhering to licensing requirements and submitting royalties.  These royalties come back to UNH through the University's licensing program to support scholarships.

Each University department and student group supports UNH's licensed vendors.  You can do this by buying all products bearing UNH trademarks from licensed vendors.

All purchases for internal consumption (i.e. products purchased for the exclusive use of a UNH department or student group, that are not resold for a profit) are exempt from royalty obligations; however, all products, including those produced for internal consumption, must be purchased from a licensed vendor and all designs must be submitted for approval.  Exemptions are granted during the artwork approval process.

WHAT CAN BE LICENSED?

Athletics Licensing will consider most products and approve all designs.  However, no products will be licensed without the approval of the Licensing Director.  The approval process assures retailers and purchasers that the products are of high quality and good taste.  The scrutiny of products helps prevent misrepresentation of marks and minimizes liabilities from harmful or hazardous items.

WHAT QUALIFIES AS A TRADEMARK?

Any mark, symbol, logo, nickname, letter(s), word, or derivative that can be associated with the University of New Hampshire and its athletic teams.

HOW DOES A MANUCFATURER OBTAIN A LICENSE?

Any prospective manufacturer who wishes to obtain a license to officially produce UNH merchandise must submit a license application.  Our licensing agent, the Collegiate Licensing Company (CLC) does all the initial paperwork.  Applications can be obtained by contacting them at the following:

CLC is responsible for assisting UNH Licensing with the processing of applications, collecting royalties, enforcing the use of trademarks, and helping to find new market opportunities.

WHAT ARE UNH'S TRADEMARKS?
