DURHAM, N.H. – The University of New Hampshire athletic department announced Sept. 9 that the renovation of the Paul Sweet Oval is progressing nicely and closing in on completion.
     To date, new lighting fixtures have been hung and the entire indoor track has been given a coat of fresh paint from floor to ceiling in the school’s white, navy blue and gray colors. Areas of the track have begun to be removed and replaced to reinforce the throws area and give the new surface a better area to bond to.

DURHAM, N.H. – Not everyone dreams to save the seals as a child, nor can everyone run 60 miles per week. Elizabeth Morrissey (Mt. Kisco, N.Y.) does and can. Morrissey is an exceptional senior zoology major and has been named to countless honor rolls. Also adding to her rigorous academic day is her key role on the UNH women’s cross country and track and field teams.

NEW ORLEANS – The University of New Hampshire women’s track and field team, as well as sophomore pole vaulter Rita Ciambra (Hanover, N.H.), were recently honored by the United States Track and Field Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) for their academic achievements during the 2008 season.
     UNH’s track and field team was one of 117 Division I women’s track and field programs recognized as a USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field Team. The Wildcats compiled a 3.18 team grade point average, well over the minimum 3.000 needed to qualify for the award.

UNH HONOR ROLL

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – A total of 201 University of New Hampshire student-athletes were named to the 2008 America East Winter/Spring Academic Honor Roll for recording a grade point average of 3.0 or above in that winter/spring semester, the league announced Thursday. Of the 201 honored, 113 of those were also named to the Commissioner’s Honor Roll for possessing a gpa of at least 3.5, the most of any of the other institution.
      In the nine-member America East conference, only Binghamton University (251 honorees) had a higher number of student-athletes recognized. The University at Albany (198), the University of Vermont (197) and Stony Brook University (188) rounded out the top five.

    The former University of New Hampshire athlete let the tears keep coming. These tears were tears of relief, tears of happiness, tears of joy. And anyway, she didn't need her eyes to see where she was going. She knew every step she took was one step closer to Beijing. Joanne (Duffley) Dow was going to the Olympics.
    On Sunday morning, the final day of the 2008 Olympic Trials in Eugene, Ore., on Dow's last chance to compete in an Olympic Games, she did exactly what she needed to do. Ten years after winning her first U.S. national title, Dow won her 10th, walking her way to Beijing.

CAMBRIDGE, MASS— Student-athletes at the University of New Hampshire continue to excel in the classroom and as a result the Wildcats finished second in the running for the 2007-08 America East Academic Cup with an impressive cumulative grade point average of 3.12.  UNH has won the Academic Cup twice, in 1998-99 and 1999-2000.
    The University of Vermont narrowly edged out UNH to take home the hardware with a 3.14 GPA.
    The University of Maine (3.10), Stony Brook University (3.06) and Binghamton University (3.04) were the other institutions in America East to compile grade point averages of 3.00 or better in 2007-08.

RESULTS

PRINCETON, N.J.
– Sophomore Rita Ciambra (Hanover, N.H.) jumped to a third-place finish for the University of New Hampshire women’s outdoor track and field team at the ECAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Princeton University’s Weaver Stadium on May 16-18.
     With six points, the Wildcats finished 34th out of 47 teams, while the University of Connecticut won the meet with 83 points.
