UNH Athletics Announces Expansion of Academic Support and Compliance

The University of New Hampshire director of athletics Marty Scarano announced Wednesday the hiring of Carly Barbato and Brandon Thomas in academic support. Additionally, Scarano also announced the promotion of Shawn Green to assistant athletic director for compliance.

Barbato earned her Bachelor’s of Science in Biology with a minor of Exercise Science at St. Lawrence University in 2007. She was a four-year letterwinner as a goalkeeper, earning Liberty League Honorable Mention in her final two seasons with the Saints. Additionally, she was named a co-captain in her senior season. Barbato also earned her Master of Arts in Educational Leadership at Loyola University of Maryland in 2009 while working as a graduate assistant coach for the women’s soccer team. Following her time with Loyola Maryland, Barbato served as an assistant coach for the UNH women’s soccer team from 2009-2012.

Thomas is a two-time time graduate from Winthrop University earning a Bachelor’s of Arts in English (2010) and a Master’s of Science in Sport & Fitness Administration (2012). Before coming to New Hampshire, Brandon worked in the athletic departments at the University of North Dakota and Belmont Abbey College.
At UNH, the two will provide comprehensive support services to student-athletes including mentoring, counseling and proactive monitoring. Furthermore, the duo will tutor groups as well as individuals, and will serve as a liaison between prospective student-athletes and families during the recruiting process regarding academic services.

“The department is excited to have had the opportunity to increase the academic support staff this year,” said Joanne Maldari, assistant athletic director for academic support. “We will be able to meet the academic needs of our student-athletes more effectively and efficiently than ever before.”

Green was elevated to the role of assistant athletic director for compliance at UNH in July 2013 after serving three years as the compliance coordinator and academic support assistant.

His responsibilities include coordinating the athletic department's National Letter of Intent program, overseeing coaches' education as well as University and community outreach and education. Additionally, he monitors rules compliance and provides NCAA rules interpretations.
