Wildcats Place 155 Student-Athletes to America-East Academic Honor Roll


CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The America East conference announced Tuesday that the University of New Hampshire ranked first in its highest percentage and number of student-athletes named to the 2012-13 America East Winter/Spring Academic Honor Roll. New Hampshire had 155 honorees, which represented 72 percent of the student-athletes who competed in those seasons, an improvement of 10 percent from the previous year.

Out of the 155 student-athletes receiving the honor, 84 Wildcats received the Commissioner’s Honor Roll, which is given to a student-athlete with a semester grade point average of at least a 3.5. The remaining 71 student-athletes that were named to the Academic Honor Roll earned at least a 3.0 grade point average in the semester.

The women’s  track & field team placed the highest total of student-athletes on the Academic Honor Roll with 70 achieving at least a 3.0 grade-point-average, 88 percent of the squad. The Wildcats’ men’s track & field squad was the top men’s team with 41 representatives, 67 percent of the team. 

New Hampshire had the highest number of student-athletes represented amongst the league with women’s track & field (70), women’s lacrosse (18) and men’s track & field (41). Additionally, women’s swimming & diving had the highest percentage named to honor roll and commissioner’s honor roll, with 64% percent of the team receiving the honor. No other team in America East had five teams receive the most named to Honor Roll and Commissioner’s Honor Roll for the winter and spring seasons. 

America East is proud to have one of most comprehensive academic awards’ programs in the country. In addition to the honor roll, an All-Academic Team comprised of student-athletes who excel both academically and athletically is chosen in each of the conference’s 20 sports by a committee consisting of faculty athletic representatives, academic advisors and sports information directors. Additionally, a Scholar-Athlete, someone who distinguishes himself/herself as the top student-athlete in his/her sport, is awarded. From that group, one male and one female is selected the America East Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Finally, the America East Academic Cup honors the league institution with the highest average cumulative GPA among its student-athletes.
