RICHMOND, Va. – Casey DeAndrade (East Bridgewater, Mass.), a redshirt freshman defensive back on the 15th-ranked University of New Hampshire football team, was honored as CAA Football Rookie of the Week on Monday.
DeAndrade was a difference maker on defense as UNH defeated (then) fourth-ranked University of Maine, 24-3, in the Nov. 23 regular-season finale at Cowell Stadium. He recorded a career-high seven tackles (six solo, one assisted), one interception and a pass breakup to increase his CAA-leading total to 17, which ranks No. 4 in the nation.
DeAndrade recorded a tackle and pass breakup on Maine's second possession of the game to force the Black Bears to punt. He recorded a tackle each of the next two possessions and, on Maine's 1st-and-10 play from its 22 yard line at 2:34 of the second quarter, DeAndrade intercepted a pass at the M26 and returned the ball 10 yards to give the Wildcats possession at the Maine 16. He went on to register four tackles in the second half.
In 10 games this season, DeAndrade has 51 tackles with two interceptions in addition to 17 pass breakups.
UNH (7-4 overall, 6-2 CAA) returns to the NCAA postseason for a national-best 10th consecutive year with a first-round game against Lafayette College on Saturday, Nov. 30.
