DURHAM, N.H. - Jessica Russell (Harrisville, R.I.), a senior co-captain on the University of New Hampshire field hockey team, was named Player of the Week by America East on Monday afternoon.
Russell recorded two goals and an assist last week to lead New Hampshire to 2-1 victories against both No. 20 Drexel University and Hofstra University.
Against Drexel, Russell scored on a penalty stroke to tie the game, 1-1, with 28:27 remaining in the game. She also netted the game-tying goal (1-1) against Hofstra, this time on a low, hard shot from the top of the circle on a penalty corner at 27:17 of the first half. Russell was credited with an assist on the game-winning goal when her shot - again from the top of the circle on a penalty corner - was re-directed into the cage by teammate Kristen Weldon (Avon, Conn.) with 6:55 left in regulation.
Through nine games, Russell leads the team in points (10) and is tied for the lead with four goals. She has 35 career points on 13 goals and nine assists.
New Hampshire (5-4 overall, 2-0 conference) will try to extend its three-game winning streak Sept. 29 (5:30 p.m.) at Northeastern University. The next Wildcat home game is Oct. 1 against Harvard. Game time is 1 p.m.
