SHEA VOTED TO ECAC ALL-STAR SECOND TEAM
CAPE COD, Mass. – Meg Shea
(Melrose, Mass.), a senior forward and captain of the University of
New Hampshire field hockey team, was named to the 2009 ECAC
Division I Field Hockey All-Star Second Team, the ECAC announced
Monday. She was the only player from the America East conference
selected as a 2009 ECAC All-Star.
Shea recorded 23 goals and nine assists for 55 points in 19 games to rank sixth in the nation in both goals per game (1.21) and points per game (2.89). She led the America East conference in points per game, goals per game and game-winning goals (four) as well as sixth in assists per game. The captain recorded team highs in goals, game-winning goals, points, shots (66) and shooting percentage (34.8%) and tied for the lead in assists.
Shea had a school-record point-scoring streak of 18 games, scored a goal in 15 of 19 games with seven multiple-goal efforts and tallied an assist in nine games, including the last five of the regular season. In UNH’s record book, both the 23 goals and 55 points rank #2 on the list of single-season superlatives.
Her season highlights included a three-goal effort at Dartmouth College (Oct.7) that tied her career highs in both goals and points (six). She also had two-goal efforts against Brown University, Providence College, Penn, Harvard, Fairfield and Maine.
Earlier this month, Shea was named to the Longstreth/NFHCA Division I All-America Third Team as well as the NFHCA Northeast Region First Team. Shea was the 2009 America East Offensive Player of the Year and was a unanimous selection to the All-Conference First Team. She was the only player to win back-to-back America East Player of the Week awards this season and received that honor three times overall, which was another league high.
UNH finished the season with a 12-7 overall record and advanced to the America East semifinals for the third consecutive year.
