MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Senior Bobby Butler (Marlboro, Mass.), forward for the 11th-ranked University of New Hampshire men’s ice hockey team, became the second player in school history to be named a Hobey Baker “Hat Trick” finalist for the Hobey Baker Memorial Award as announced by the committee Wednesday afternoon. Darren Haydar was part of the first-ever Hobey “Hat Trick” in 2002, while Jason Krog remains UNH’s only Hobey Baker Award winner after he won the 1999 award and was named from a field of 10 finalists. DICK UMILE NAMED FINALIST FOR SPENCER PENROSE NATIONAL COACH OF THE YEAR
WAKEFIELD, Mass. – Head Coach Dick Umile of the University of New Hampshire men’s hockey team has been named one of nine finalist for the Spencer Penrose Award, given annually to the top NCAA Division I Men’s Ice Hockey Coach of the Year. To be a finalist for this award, you must either be voted Coach of the Year in your conference or take your team to the NCAA Frozen Four. The announcement was made March 31 by the America Hockey Coaches Association.Umile is an eighth-time finalist for this award and won the Spencer Penrose Award in 1999.

ALBANY, N.Y. – Bobby Butler (Marlboro, Mass.) and Paul Thompson (Derry, N.H.) each registered a pair of goals and an assist to lift the 12th-ranked University of New Hampshire men’s hockey team to Friday night’s 6-2 win against sixth-ranked Cornell University in first round action at the 2010 NCAA East Regional held at Albany’s Times Union Center. The Wildcats return to the regional finals for the second-straight season and will play fourth-seeded Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT), which defeated top-seeded Denver, 2-1, in the day’s first semifinal. ATHLETICS PANEL REPORT SUBMITTED TO UNH PRESIDENT
DURHAM, N.H. – University of New Hampshire President Mark W. Huddleston accepted this week a report from a special panel he commissioned to examine funding for UNH athletics programs. Huddleston said he would review and respond to the recommendations over the next several weeks and in the context of the goals of UNH’s 10-year strategic plan.

DURHAM, N.H. -- The 13th-ranked University of New Hampshire men’s hockey team continues its three-game homestand with a pair of games against 17th-ranked Vermont on Friday and Saturday night at Whittemore Center. UNH won this year’s only prior meeting 5-2 on Dec. 6 at Gutterson Fieldhouse. Friday night’s game will be broadcast live on NESN with a 7:30 p.m. start tabbed (doors open 6:30 p.m.). while Saturday night the teams will meet at 7 p.m.

MEN'S HOCKEY FALLS TO 10TH-RANKED UMASS, 4-3, IN OVERTIME
AMHERST, Mass. – No. 10 Massachusetts scored the game-tying goal with 11 seconds left in regulation and scored at 2:05 of overtime to capture a 4-3 come-from-behind win over the University of New Hampshire men’s hockey team in Friday night’s Hockey East action at Mullins Center. The teams will meet again Saturday night at Mullins Center (7 p.m.).

MEN'S HOCKEY'S SPEELMAN TABBED HOCKEY EAST ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
WAKEFIELD, Mass. – Freshman forward Dalton Speelman (San Jose, Calif.) of the University of New Hampshire men’s hockey team was named Hockey East Pro Ambitions Rookie of the Week. The announcement was made Monday by the league office. He becomes the first Wildcat to earn this award since James van Riemsdyk did so on Jan. 14, 2008.

DURHAM, N.H. – Sophomore Stevie Moses (Leominster, Mass.) notched two goals and classmate Mike Borisenok (Watervliet, N.Y.) tallied a goal and two assists as the University of New Hampshire recorded a 5-2 Hockey East victory over the University of Maine in front of a sold-out crowd of 6,501 fans, who were decked out in white for the annual “White Out the Whit,” at the Whittemore Center on Saturday night.

UMILE INDUCTED INTO NEW HAMPSHIRE LEGENDS OF HOCKEY HALL OF FAME
BEDFORD, N.H. – The New Hampshire Legends of Hockey (NHLH) inducted a group of seven Hall of Famers on Sunday, Oct. 18 and University of New Hampshire men’s ice hockey head coach Dick Umile was among that group of seven for 2009. In addition, former Wildcat assistant coach and longtime voice of the team Bob Norton will also be inducted. The ceremony was held at C.R. Sparks in Bedford.

The top-ranked RedHawks, who played in the national championship game a year ago, swept a pair of games against St. Cloud State in the opening weekend of the regular season. The last time these teams met, the Wildcats dropped a 2-1 decision in the 2007 NCAA Northeast Regional at Verizon Wireless Arena.

van RIEMSDYK AMONG THREE FORMER WILDCATS IN NHL
DURHAM, N.H. -- Former University of New Hampshire men's ice hockey player James van Riemsdyk (Middletown, N.J.) headlines of group of three Wildcats to open the 2009-10 season in the National Hockey League. van Riemsdyk, who was UNH's leading scorer a year ago with 40 points, will open the season with the Philadelphia Flyers on Friday at 7 p.m. against the Carolina Hurricanes. van Riemsdyk is joined by Ty Conklin (Anchorage, Alaska), who is beginning the first year of a two-year deal with the St. Louis Blues and Daniel Winnik (Mississauga, Ontario), who enters his third season with the Phoenix Coyotes.
