WAKEFIELD, Mass. – Junior forward Dalton Speelman (San Jose, Calif.) of the University of New Hampshire men's hockey team was named Hockey East Athletic Republic Player of the Week. The announcement was made Monday by the league office.
Speelman led the UNH men's ice hockey team to a season-opening two-game series sweep of St. Cloud State at the Whittemore Center with a four-point effort last weekend. He matched his personal best of two goals and added an assist for a career-high three points in the Oct. 12 season opener, a 5-3 win. Speelman also had an assist in the next night's 4-2 victory.
With Friday's game tied 2-2 through two periods, Speelman netted a power-play goal 31 seconds into the final frame to give the Wildcats a lead they would not relinquish. He scored again at 3:10 to extend the advantage to 4-2 with what proved to be the game-winning goal. On Saturday, he assisted on Nick Sorkin's goal that gave UNH a 2-1 lead at 7:13 of the second period.
Speelman missed a majority of the 2011-12 season with a wrist injury. He recorded three goals and three assists for six points in 11 games before incurring the season-ending injury.
Speelman and the rest of the 15th-ranked Wildcats return to action Saturday, October 20 when they play host to No. 11 Boston University. Puck drops at 7 p.m. at Whittemore Center Arena with television coverage on WBIN and FOX College Sports.
