STOWE, Vt. – Powered by the second runner-up finish in as many races from Sam Coffey (Snowmass, Colo.), the University of New Hampshire men's alpine skiing team captured a slalom victory and finished in second place at the conclusion of Saturday's alpine portion of the Vermont Winter Carnival at Mt. Mansfield Ski and Snowboard Club.
The Wildcats, who also won Friday's men's giant slalom race, compiled 394 points to place behind host school Vermont, which racked up 422 points. Dartmouth (357) took third place, with Middlebury (292) a distant fourth. Nordic events for the UVM Carnival are slated for Feb. 2-3 at Trapp Family Lodge.
Coffey registered a combined time of 1 minute, 46.70 seconds to amass 47 points, 1.17 seconds behind SL winner Travis Dawson of Vermont. Jay Ogle (Pittsfield, Mass.), who competed for Mt. Mansfield prior to joining UNH as a freshman this season, finished in 11th place in a time of 1:50.48 for 29 points, just ahead of 12th-place finisher and Proctor Academy alumnus Geoff Bonewald (New London, N.H.), who clocked in at 1:50.52 for 28 points. New Hampshire's 104 points edged Colby College's total of 102.5 for the victory.
Catherine Blanchard (Eastman, Quebec) repeated as the top 'Cat on the women's side for the second day in a row by virtue of her fifth-place finish of 1:53.56 in the SL for 39 points. Randa Teschner (Petawawa, Ontario) earned her first collegiate points courtesy of an 11th-place time of 1:55.17 for 29 points, and Marie-Elaine Lepine (Mont-Tremblant, Quebec) totaled 22 points by placing 20th in 1:56.51. With 90 points, the Wildcats finished in fourth place; UVM won the women's SL with 122 points.
UNH returns to EISA skiing at the St. Lawrence Carnival on Friday, Jan. 18, and Saturday, Jan. 19, with alpine events at Whiteface Mountain and Nordic racing at Mt.
