DURHAM, NH -- UNH got off to a good start when junior Adam Purcell (Barrington, R.I.) scored 15 minutes into the game, but could not hold on as the University of Rhode Island scored three unanswered goals to win the game Friday night in Rhode Island.
Purcell, the leading scorer from last year, found the back of the net off an assist by senior Jay Heimgartner (Wethersfield, Conn.). The lead would not hold on long as Rhode Island's Nicholas McGreath tied the game two minutes later at 1-1.
In the second half, McGreath scored his second goal to put the Rams on top 2-1. Rhode Island later extended the lead to 3-1 when Greg Bironas put one past UNH goaltender Mitch Osman (Herndon, Va.).
Osman stopped twelve shots, while Rhode Island's Mark Bryant made two saves for the victors.
The Wildcats return home Wednesday Sept. 1 to host UMass at 3:30 p.m. UNH will host the 10th Annual Nike/Pepsi Soccer Classic Saturday Sept. 4 and Sunday Sept. 5 where the Wildcats will take on Quinnipiac on Saturday and Philadelphia University on Sunday. Both games start at 3 p.m.
