DURHAM, N.H. – Junior John Prizzi (Wyckoff, N.J.) of the University of New Hampshire men's track and field team will compete at the NCAA Track and Field Championships on Thursday, June 12 at 8:35 p.m. at the University of Oregon's Hayward Field.
Prizzi, a junior distance runner, will compete in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the NCAAs. Prizzi qualified for the meet with a fourth-place finish in the race at the NCAA Regional Meet on May 31.
The junior finished the race with a school-record mark of 8 minutes and 42.20 seconds to qualify with the eighth fastest time in the country. The 8:42.20 mark also bested his previous school-record time of 8:47.30, which he recorded at Princeton University's Larry Ellis Invitational in April.
Prizzi has earned several accolades for his performance on the track this season. On June, 7, the junior was named the Northeast Region Track Athlete of the Year by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. Following the America East Track Championships Prizzi was named to the conference All-Academic team for his performance in the classroom and on the track.
Prizzi will be the second member of the UNH track and field program to compete at an NCAA Championship during the 2013-14 school year. Freshman All-American Elinor Purrier (Montgomery, Vt.) of the women's indoor track and field squad compete in the mile event at the NCAA Indoor Championships in February.
