KINGSTON, R.I. – Six different athletes, as well as the 4x800 meter relay team, posted first-place finishes to lead the University of New Hampshire men’s indoor track and field team to a quad-meet victory Saturday afternoon at Mackal Field House.
With 70 points, the Wildcats edged the University of Rhode Island (70) and beat out Central Connecticut State University (24) and the College of the Holy Cross (13).
Sophomore Gabe Dano (Merrimack, N.H.) finished first in the 200 meters in 22.45 seconds. Freshman Sean Mitchell was sixth in 23.39 seconds.
Senior Ben Jenkins (Francestown, N.H.) won the 800 meters, finishing in a time of one minute, 56.10 seconds. Sophomore Jacob McDougle (Walpole, N.H.) placed fourth in 1:58.82.
Senior Matt O’Connor (Rhinebeck, N.Y.) was victorious in the mile in 4:18.38, with junior Josh Kearns (Ridgefield, Conn.) right behind in second at 4:24.68. Freshman Daniel Decrescenzo (New Milford, Conn.) was fifth in a time of 4:32.30.
On the field side of things, senior Jeff Kaste (Atkinson, N.H.) was a winner in the weight throw with a toss of 62 feet, 3.75 inches. Fellow senior Reed Liset (Dover, N.H.) placed third at 53-9.75.
Sophomore Brice Paey (Milton, N.H.) placed first in the shot put with a throw of 56-0.50. Kaste was fourth at 49-7.75, while Liset came in sixth at 47-11.75.
Senior Pat Casey (South Yarmouth, Mass.) won the high jump with a leap of 6-4.25. Junior Frank Radlof and senior Spencer Shaw (Hampton, N.H.) placed third and fourth, respectively, with marks of 6-2.25.
The 4x800 meter relay team of freshman William Godfrey, Kearns, McDougle and O’Connor finished first in a time of 7:54.38.
The 4x400 meter relay team of Jenkins, junior Will Brehm (Pembroke, N.H.), sophomore Alex Macleod (East Longmeadow, Mass.) and Dano finished second in a time of 3:30.62, just 64-hundredths of a second behind URI’s first-place squad.
Shaw also finished second in the 55 meters at 6.68 seconds, seven-hundredths of a second behind the first-place finisher. Shaw was again a runner-up in the long jump with a mark of 21-11.75. Radlof was third at 21-4.25, while junior Cory Varrell placed fifth at 20-9.75.
In the 500 meters, Brehm finished second in 1:05.84, while Godfrey was fourth in 1:06.00.
In the 3,000 meters, senior Nick Decrescenzo (New Milford, Conn.) and sophomore Andrew Dionne (Westerly, R.I.) placed second and third, respectively, in times of 8:37.18 and 8:59.43.
Sophomore John Donaghy jumped to a second-place finish in the pole vault with a mark of 12-9.50.
Sophomore Marc Ouellette (Hopkinton, N.H.) placed third in the 1,000 meters in a time of 2:36.06, while freshman Alex Beaulieu came in fifth in 2:41.60.
In the triple jump, Varell, and juniors Tyrone Stewart (Exeter, N.H.) and Brett Clark (Merrimack, N.H.) placed third, fourth and sixth, respectively, with marks of 42-9.75, 41-2.25 and 40-6.
Mitchell and Macleod were third and sixth, respectively, in the 400 meters in times of 51.15 and 51.55 seconds. Macleod and freshman Renrick Pesce finished fifth and sixth, respectively, in the 55-meter hurdles in 8.32 and 8.40 seconds.
The Wildcats return to action Saturday, Jan. 31 at the Harvard Invitational at the Gordon Track Center.
