DURHAM, N.H. – Sophomore Gabe Dano (Merrimack, N.H.) won a pair of events and fellow sophomore Brice Paey (Milton, N.H.) erased a 22-year-old schoold record in the shot put to lead the University of New Hampshire men’s indoor track and field team to a 111-62 win against the University of Maine on Saturday afternoon in the first meet at the newly renovated Paul Sweet Oval.
Dano was first in the 55 meters with a time of 6.64 seconds, .03 seconds ahead of teammate Spencer Shaw (Hampton, N.H.). Sophomore Wesley Cotnoir (Auburn, N.H.) was third in 6.77 seconds. Dano was also victorious in the 200 meters in 23.18 seconds, while Cotnoir was second in 23.97 seconds.
Paey’s IC4A Championship-qualifying throw of 57 feet, 3.75 inches beat Ed McCabe’s nearly 23-year-old mark of 56-10.0. Senior Jeff Kaste (Atkinson, N.H.) and sophomore John Randall (Boscawen, N.H.) were second and third, respectively, with tosses of 52-0.50 and 46-0.50. Kaste won the weight throw with a toss of 60-7.75, while senior Reed Liset (Dover, N.H.) was second at 54-8.25.
Senior Ben Jenkins (Francestown, N.H.) won the 1,000 meters with a time of two minutes, 29.69 seconds. Fellow seniors Matt O’Connor (Rhinebeck, N.Y.) and Cale Dubay (Caribou, Maine) were second and third, respectively, with times of 2:32.90 and 2:35.40.
Senior Nick Decrescenzo (New Milford, Conn.) came in first in the 3,000 meters, crossing the line in a time of 8:51.82. Fellow Senior Brent Powers (Remsen, N.Y.) was right behind in second at 8:52.88.
In the high jump, senior Pat Casey (South Yarmouth, Mass.) won with a leap of 6-8.75.
Shaw won the long jump with a leap of 23-0.75, while juniors Frank Radlof and Tyrone Stewart (Exeter, N.H.) placed second and third, respectively, with jumps of 21-2.0 and 20-7.75. Radlof also finished second in the triple jump with a leap of 42-9.50.
Senior David Dreyer (LeRoy, N.Y.) placed second in the pole vault, clearing a height of 13-11.75.
Back on the track, the Wildcats swept the relay events by finishing the 4x400 relay in a time of 3:27.82 and the 4x800 in 8:03.44. The Wildcats were 10.42 seconds faster than the 4x400 runner-up – their own “B” team – and 11.96 seconds faster than Maine in the 4x800.
Sophomore Alex MacLeod (East Longmeadow, Mass.) won the 55-meter hurdles in a time of 8.36 seconds. Radlof was second at 8.41 seconds, while freshman Renrick Pesce was third in 8.55 seconds. MacLeod placed second in the 400 meters in 52.54 seconds. Junior Jeff Loring was third in 54.19 seconds.
Freshman Sean Mitchell won the 500 meters in a time of 1:06.88, while sophomore Jacob McDougle (Walpole, N.H.) placed first in the 800 meters in 1:57.57.
Junior Josh Kearns (Ridgefield, Conn.) finished second in the mile in a time of 4:20.56.
The Wildcats return to action Saturday, Jan. 17 when they host the College of the Holy Cross and Quinnipiac University in a tri-meet at the Paul Sweet Oval.
