DURHAM, N.H. – Junior Will Brehm (Pembroke, N.H.) won a pair of events and sophomore Brice Paey (Milton, N.H.) set a school record in the shot put to lead the University of New Hampshire men’s indoor track and field team to a first-place finish in a tri-meet at the newly renovated Paul Sweet Oval on Saturday afternoon.
With 112 points, the Wildcats handily ran past the College of the Holy Cross (44) and Quinnipiac University (15).
Brehm won the 200 meters in a time of 22.76 seconds. Sophomore Gabe Dano (Merrimack, N.H.) and freshman Sean Mitchell placed second and third, respectively, in times of 22.79 and 23.71 seconds. Brehm was also victorious in the 500 meters in a time of one minute, 9.07 seconds. Fellow junior Jeffrey Loring and freshman Sean Ramsey finished second and third, respectively, in times of 1:11.30 and 1:11.99.
Paey finished first in the shot put when he used an IC4A Championship-qualifying throw of 57 feet, 10.25 inches to break the school record of 57-3.75 that he set last month in a dual-meet against the University of Maine. Seniors Reed Liset (Dover, N.H.) and Jeffrey Kaste (Atkinson, N.H.) were second and third, respectively, with throws of 49-4.25 and 47-9.25. Paey was also fifth in the weight throw with a toss of 48-9. Kaste, Liset and junior Paul DeTurk finished first, second and third, respectively, with throws of 59-4, 53-0.25 and 52-2.
Senior Bobby Edgerton (Cornish, N.H.) placed first in the 800 meters in a time of 1:56.10. Edgerton was also second in the 400 meters in a time of 51.59, behind Mitchell’s 51.25, but ahead of sophomore Alex Macleod (East Longmeadow, Mass.) at 51.91. Macleod won the 55-meter hurdles in 8.45 seconds. Senior David Dreyer (LeRoy, N.Y.) was second at 9.22. Dreyer won the pole vault by clearing a height of 13-5.25.
In the 55 meters, Dano finished first in 6.67 seconds, just ahead of senior Spencer Shaw (Hampton, N.H.) at 6.77. Shaw was first in the long jump with leap of 22-1.75. Juniors Tyrone Stewart (Exeter, N.H.) and Cory Varrell were second and third, respectively, with marks of 20-10 and 20-7.75. In the high jump, Shaw also finished second at 6-2.75 behind senior Pat Casey (South Yarmouth, Mass.) at 6-6.75. Varrell and junior Brett Clark (Merrimack, N.H.) finished 1-2 in the triple jump with marks of 42-8 and 40-1.50.
Senior Ben Jenkins (Francestown, N.H.) was victorious in the mile in a time of 4:21.39.
Senior Brent Powers (Remsen, N.Y.) was first in the 3,000 meters in a time of 8:44.01.
The Wildcats won the 4x400-meter relay in a time of 3:34.16. They were third in the 4x800 at 8:26.26.
Senior Matt O’Connor (Rhinebeck, N.Y.) placed second in the 1,000 meters in a time of 2:35.04.
The Wildcats return to action Saturday, January 24 at noon when they hook up with the University of Rhode Island in a dual-meet at Mackal Field House.
