Wildcat men's track in second after day one at the America East Championships

DURHAM - The University of New Hampshire men's track team is in second place with 58.33 points after day one of the 2006 America East Outdoor Track Championships at the Reggie F. Atkins Track Facility on the UNH campus in Durham.

Senior Matt Russell (Odgenberg, N.Y.) won the America East Championship in the 3000-meter steeplechase at nine minutes and 10.79 seconds qualifying for the ICAAAA's on May 12-14 in Princeton, N.J. Sophomore Jordan Horwitz (Evanston, Ill.) placed fourth in the steeplechase at 9:27.79, followed by freshman Matt O'Connor (Rhinebeck, N.Y.) and junior Rodolfo Crispin (Ridgewood, N.J.) in sixth (9:28.22) and eighth place (9:39.41).

Sophomore James Myles (Merrimack, N.H.) finished third overall in the 110 meter hurdle preliminaries with a time of 14.82, while senior David Benedetto (Alton, N.H.) finished in seventh place in the race at 15.10, both Wildcats will compete in the finals tomorrow afternoon at 12:25. Benedetto also placed third in the 400-meter hurdle preliminaries at 55.96.

In the 10,000-meter run, senior Andrew VanHoogenstyn (Scarborough, Maine) was the top finisher for the 'Cats in third place at 31:49.89, while Horwitz came back and placed fourth in his second race of the day at 32:19.53.

After day one of the decathlon, junior David Doiron (Sanford, Maine) paced the Wildcats with a six place finish with 2939 points, taking first in the high jump at six feet and two inches earning 696 points in that event. Sophomore Daniel O'Hara (Needham, Mass.) was right behind in seventh place at 2933. Sophomore Shane Casimiro (Lee, N.H.) and Junior Ethan Gato (Portland, Maine) placed 10th and 11th respectively with 2850 and 2355.

Sophomore Matthew Begley (Brookville, Md.) took home third place in the pole vault with 4.65 meters, while freshman Spencer Shaw (Hampton, N.H.) posted a third place finish in the long jump at 7.07 meters. In the hammer throw, sophomore Reed Liset (Dover, N.H.) placed fifth at 50.15 meters, while freshman Jeff Kaste (Atkinson, N.H.) ranked seventh among America East athletes at 47.29. Junior Tristan Hall (Londonderry, N.H.) finished fifth in the long jump at 6.77 meters and sixth the javelin throw at 52.12 meters.

The Wildcat men's track team returns to action in the final day of the America East Track Championships on Sunday, May 7th. Events begin at 9 a.m. with the decathlon and heptathlon and end with the discus throw at 1:30 p.m. For the full Sunday schedule visit www.unhwildcats.com.
