– Junior Matthew O’Connor (Rhinebeck, N.Y.), sophomore Wesley Dinnan (Juneau, Alaska), freshmen Brice Paey (Milton, N.H.) and Alex Macleod (East Longmeadow, Mass.) and the 4x400-meter relay team all won an event to power the University of New Hampshire men’s outdoor track and field team to a second-place finish in a five-team meet at the College of the Holy Cross’ Hart Recreation Center on April 22.
With 141 points, the Wildcats finished behind the University of Rhode Island (245), but ahead of Holy Cross (120), Worcester State College (36) and Quinnipiac University (33).
O’Connor captured first place in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in a time of nine minutes, 23.31 seconds. Senior Jesse Kearns (Ridgefield, Conn.) finished in second place at 9:43.62, while sophomore Pat Rush (Nashua, N.H.) was fourth at 10:17.19.
Dinnan ran to victory in the 5,000-meters in a time of 15:08.48. Junior Nick Decrescenzo (New Milford, Conn.) finished third in 15:23.42.
Paey won the shot put with a throw of 17.56 meters.
Macleod finished first in the 400-meter hurdles in 55.45 seconds, three-tenths of a second ahead of the runner-up.
The ‘Cats tied URI for first in the 4x400-meter relay when they finished in 3:23.63
Sophomore Spencer Shaw (Hampton, N.H.) submitted a pair of second-place finishes. Shaw finished the 100-meters in 11.46 seconds, just four-tenths of a second behind the winner, and also recorded a leap of 6.63 meters in the long jump. Shaw was also third in the triple jump with a leap of 13.45 meters. Freshman Wesley Cotnoir (Auburn, N.H.) was fourth in the 100 in 11.57 seconds, while junior Tyrone Stewart (Exeter, N.H.) was fourth in the triple jump at 12.96 meters.
Junior Pat Casey (So. Yarmouth, Mass.) placed second in the high jump, tying the winner’s leap of 1.93 meters, but needing more attempts to do so. Casey was also sixth in the long jump with a distance of 6.34 meters.
Sophomore David Dreyer (LeRoy, N.Y.) tied for second in the pole vault by clearing a distance of 4.49 meters.
In the javelin, freshman Mike Simon (Bethel, Conn.) finished second with a distance of 60.47 meters, while sophomore Chris Morgan (Goffstown, N.H.) came in fourth at 54.93 meters.
Junior Ben Stein (Canton, Mass.) placed third in the 400-meters in a time of 50.85 seconds.
Freshman Matt Powers (Harpswell, Maine) finished fifth in the hammer throw with a toss of 47.24 meters.
Freshman Joe Berchtold (Londonderry, N.H.) was fifth in the discus with a throw of 41.87 meters.
Senior Travis Parker (Fairfax, Va.) placed sixth in the 200-meters in 22.44 seconds.

The Wildcats return to action April 24-26 at the Drake Relays, and again April 26 at 11 a.m. when they host the Wildcat Invitational III at Reggie F. Atkins Track.
