ORONO, Maine – Senior throwers Jeff Kaste (Atkinson, N.H.) and Reed Liset (Dover, N.H.), and sophomore thrower Brice Paey (Milton, N.H.), each recorded first-place finishes to lead the University of New Hampshire men’s outdoor track and field team to a season-opening dual-meet win, 101-67, against the University of Maine on Saturday afternoon at the Beckett Family Track Complex.
Kaste was victorious in the hammer throw with a toss of 55.84 meters. Liset was second at 55.21 meters, while sophomore Paul DeTurk (Durham, N.H.) came in third at 55.14 meters.
Liset won the discus throw with a mark of 47.52 meters, Kaste and sophomore John Randall (Boscawen, N.H.) placed second and third, respectively, with throws of 41.64 and 35.94 meters.
In the shot put, Paey, Kaste and Liset were the top three finishers with throws of 17.30, 15.33 and 14.64 meters.
Junior Frank Radlof (Milford, N.H.) placed first in the long jump with a leap of 6.62 meters.
In the high jump, junior Anders Nordquist (Wolfeboro, N.H.) finished first at 1.87 meters, while Radlof and freshman Renrick Pesce (Bristol, Conn.) were second and third, respectively, at 1.77 and 1.67 meters.
Sophomore Mike Simon (Durham, Conn.) finished first in the javelin with a throw of 66.33 meters. Junior Chris Morgan (Goffstown, N.H.) and Radlof were third and fourth, respectively, at 58.19 and 54.69 meters.
Senior David Dreyer (LeRoy, N.Y.) placed second in the pole vault, clearing a height of 4.41 meters.
On the track, junior Will Brehm (Pembroke, N.H) turned in a pair of top-two finishes as he won the 200 meters in 22.80 seconds and was runner-up in the 100 at 11.42 seconds. In the 200, senior Spencer Shaw (Hampton, N.H.) and freshman Sean Mitchell (Concord, Calif.) finished second and third, respectively in 23.22 and 23.28 seconds. Shaw and classmate Marcus Boggis (Milford, N.H.) were third and fourth, respectively, in the 100 at 11.45 and 11.63 seconds.
Pesce finished first in the 110-meter hurdles in 17.52 seconds, while Nordquist was third at 20.29 seconds. Pesce was also third in the 400-meter hurdles behind the winner, sophomore Alex Macleod (East Longmeadow, Mass.), in 56.61 seconds.
Junior Josh Kearns (Ridgefield, Conn.) finished first in the 800 meters in a time of one minute, 55.34 seconds, while classmate Wesley Dinnan (Juneau, Alaska) was third at 2:01.39.
The Wildcats’ 4x400-meter relay team of Mitchell, Macleod, freshman William Godfrey (Merrimack, N.H.) and Brehm placed first in 3:22.26.
Godfrey was second in the 400 meters in 50.13 seconds.
Dinnan placed second in the 1500 meters, while freshman Alex Beaulieu (Merrimack, N.H.) and senior Cale Dubay (Caribou, Maine) finished third and fourth, respectively, in 4:08.03 and 4:12.90.
Junior Wesley Moseman (Remsen, N.Y.) placed third in the 5000 meters in a time of 15:26.37.
The Wildcats, who were picked second in the America East preseason coaches’ poll, return to action Saturday, April 4 at 11 a.m. when they host the Wildcat Invitational I at the Reggie F. Atkins Track.
