DURHAM, N.H. - The University of New Hampshire women’s basketball team earned the No. 6 seed and will face No. 3 Binghamton in the quarterfinal round of the 2002 America East Championships beginning next Thursday (3/7) at the Chase Family Arena in West Hartford, Conn.

The Wildcats, who lost to Boston University 68-64 in overtime Friday night, were bumped down to the sixth seed following Hartford’s 72-58 victory over Maine in Orono on Saturday. UNH (15-12, 9-7) and Binghamton (19-8, 10-6) split two meetings during the regular season with each team winning on the other’s home floor. The Bearcats beat the Wildcats, 62-56 in Durham on Feb.3 and UNH returned the favor with a 62-49 victory in Vestal, N.Y., last Saturday.

The other quarterfinal matchups feature No. 2 Boston University vs. No. 7 Stony Brook in the tournament opener Thursday at 12 p.m., followed by UNH-Binghamton in the second game of the afternoon session. Top-seeded Vermont takes on No. 8 Northeastern to open the evening session at 6 p.m. and will be followed by No. 4 Maine vs. No. 5 Hartford in the nightcap. The semifinals begin Friday (3/8) at 6 p.m. The championship game is Saturday (3/9) afternoon at 3 p.m. The semifinals and finals will be shown on America East TV .
