No. 2 New Hampshire women's hockey upset by UConn, 2-0

DURHAM, N.H. - Jacquelyn McGuire recorded a goal and an assist and Shannon Murphy stopped 31 shots to lead the University of Connecticut to Saturday afternoon's 2-0 ECAC Eastern Women's Hockey League victory against No. 2 University of New Hampshire at the Whittemore Center.

UNH had its 10-game unbeaten streak (9-0-1) snapped with the loss and is now 9-2-1 overall and 5-1-0 in the ECAC East. UConn improved to 6-5-1 overall and 4-2-0 in the conference.

Following a scoreless first period in which UNH had an 11-2 shot advantage - and UConn killed off a two-skater disadvantage for 1:52, McGuire scored a power-play goal at 8:39 of the middle stanza. UNH goalie Jen Huggon (Plymouth, Mass.) stopped the initial shot by Kimberly Berry but McGuire collected the rebound and shot the puck into the net.

The Huskies took that one-goal advantage into the final frame and capitalized on their second power-play opportunity early in the third period to build a 2-0 lead when Allison Oropallo scored from the left doorstep. McGuire and Laura Stosky earned assists on the play.

UNH, which finished the game with a 31-15 advantage in shots, pulled Huggon in favor of an extra skater for the final 1:30 but could not solve Murphy.

These two teams conclude the two-game weekend series Sunday at the Whittemore Center. Game time is 2 p.m.
