DURHAM, N.H. -- Debbie Bernhard (Acton, Mass.) scored two goals to lead the No. 6 University of New Hampshire women's hockey team to Saturday afternoon's 7-4 victory against Niagara University at the Whittemore Center.
UNH, now unbeaten in five games (4-0-1), improved to 11-1-1 overall and Niagara is 7-6-0. The Wildcats' offense was also led by Kristen Thomas (Wilmington, Mass.) and Carolyn Gordon (Petrolia, Ont.), both of whom recorded a goal and two assists. Chandy Kaip (Radville, Sask.) also had three points, all on assists.
UNH led 4-1 after two periods but the Purple Eagles closed within 4-3 on power-play goals by Teresa Marchese-Del Monte (two goals, two assists) and Candice Moxley at 5:19 and 6:16, respectively.
Gordon gave the Wildcats a 5-3 edge at 12:52, but the visitors again closed within a goal on a Valerie Hall (goal, two assists) tally at 16:22. Allison Edgar (Brigden, Ont.) scored 1:11 later to put UNH ahead 6-4 and Randi MacMaster (Syracuse, N.Y.) scored an empty-net goal at 18:56 to secure the victory.
After falling behind 1-0 early in the game, UNH rallied to take a 3-1 lead at the first intermission on tallies by Lindsay Hansen (Northport, N.Y.), Thomas and Debbie Bernhard (Acton, Mass.). Niagara had taken a 1-0 lead on a Marchese-Del Monte strike at 2:54.
Bernhard netted her second goal of the game to give the 'Cats a 4-1 lead at 16:39 of the middle stanza.
UNH goalie Jen Huggon (Plymouth, Mass.) finished with 20 saves while NU counterpart Jennifer Mascaro stopped 26 shots.
New Hampshire and Niagara conclude the two-game series Sunday (2 p.m.) at the Whittemore Center.
