CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Laura Puccia (Fairport, N.Y.), a freshman midfielder on the University of New Hampshire lacrosse team, was named Rookie of the Week by the America East conference on Monday.
Puccia recorded career highs in both goals (three) and points (four) in UNH's 16-9 victory against Binghamton University on March 24. She also tallied a personal-best three draw controls as well as one ground ball and one caused turnover. She scored the Wildcats' fifth goal and set up the next tally during part of the team's 6-0 first-half run that transformed a one-goal deficit into an 8-2 halftime lead. After the visitors closed within 11-7 in the second half, Puccia scored consecutive goals to give momentum back to the Wildcats.
Puccia has started all seven games this season and has 11 points on nine goals and two assists. She opened her career with a goal in five consecutive games and recorded her first multiple-goal game with two tallies at 20th-ranked Stanford University. Puccia ranks second on the team in shots (24) and is tied for second in draw controls (eight); she is also tied for third in caused turnovers (five) as well as fourth in goals and fifth in points.
New Hampshire concludes its three-game homestand March 28 against 11th-ranked Vanderbilt University. Game time at Memorial Field is 12:30 p.m.
