DURHAM, N.H. -- Debbie Newman (Union, Conn.), a senior back on the University of New Hampshire women's soccer team, was selected to the ESPN The Magazine Academic District 1 University Division First Team, CoSIDA announced Thursday.
Newman received the same honor in 2004 and is a three-time selection to the America East Academic Honor Roll (2002, 2003, 2004). She has also been the recipient of UNH women's soccer Student-Athlete Award (highest grade point average) each of the past three years.
Newman was co-captain of the 2005 Wildcat squad and leader of the defensive unit as she battled through nagging injuries to start 15 of the 16 matches in which she played. With Newman directing the backs, UNH recorded eight shutouts and surrendered just one goal three other times. She recorded one point this season with an assist on the game-tying goal at the University of Vermont on Oct. 9.
Newman, a four-year starter for the 'Cats, recorded five points (all on assists) in 75 career matches. Her other collegiate honors include America East All-Conference Second Team (2002, 2003, 2004), NEWISA All-New England First Team (2003) and America East All-Rookie Team (2002).
UNH (9-8-2) competed in the America East Championship for the fifth consecutive season and advanced to the semifinals for the fourth straight year. The Wildcats' season ended with a 2-1 overtime loss at Boston University on Oct. 30.
