CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Junior swimmer Oneida Cooper (Johannesburg, South Africa) of the University of New Hampshire women's swimming & diving team has been named America East Swimmer of the Week, announced by the conference Tuesday.
This marks the first time Cooper has earned the conference award in her career. Additionally, it is the fourth different UNH swimmer that has garnered the weekly award this season.
Cooper tallied the top time in two events as part of a three-day meet at the Terrier Invitational hosted by Boston University. Registering an America East-best 4 minutes, 53.70 seconds, Cooper headlined the 500-yard freestyle event out of 24 participants.
Furthermore, she was part of the winning quartet in the 400-yard medley relay with a time of 3:49.81.
The junior also had a notable performance in the 200-yard freestyle as Cooper clocked in with a conference-best 1:51.26 mark.
Cooper logged the fastest time in the conference in the 100-yard butterfly. After registering a time of 57.40 in the preliminary round, Cooper was placed in a swim off as she tied another swimmer for the last spot of the 'A' group. Her ensuing time of 56.06 tied the top time in the preliminary round.
Overall, the 'Cats placed fourth at the Terrier Invitational with 573 points.
New Hampshire concluded the 2013 portion of the schedule as the Wildcats return to the water on Jan. 17 to visit in-state rival Dartmouth College. The dual meet is set to begin at 6 p.m. For more information about UNH swimming & diving, please visit UNHWildcats.com.
