UNH Women’s Indoor Track Places Third at Rhode Island

KINGSTON, R.I. -Wins by UNH jumpers Kiah Quarles (Derry, N.H) and Katie Hoppe (Hopkinton, N.H.) helped the women's indoor track team to a third place finish in an eight-team meet at the University of Rhode Island on Saturday.

The Wildcats finished with a score of 133. Host Rhode Island won the meet with a score of 161.50 and Brown University took second with 159.20. UNH finished ahead of the University of Massachusetts-Amherst, Central Connecticut, Southern Connecticut, Quinnipiac University, and the University of Hartford.

The jump events went very well for UNH. Quarles won the long jump event with a leap of 5.39 meters. Nipping at her heels in second place was Amanda Downs (Laconia, N.H.) when she jumped a distance of 5.07 meters. Quarles added a second place finish on the day, coming in just behind Brown University's Fara Kitton in the 55 meter low hurdle event.

The triple jump also had two Wildcats finish on top. Hoppe won the event, clearing a distance of 11.13 meters. Amy Roccio (Beverly, Mass.) took second place with a jump of 10.86 meters. Roccio added a third place finish in the high jump when she cleared 1.55 meters.

Amanda Schweizer (Merrimack, N.H.) placed second in the 500-meter event with a time of 1:20.44. Kim Usseglio (Watertown, Mass.) placed fourth in the same event, running it in 1:21.42.

An abundance of third place finishers added to the Wildcats' point total. Chelsea Corr (East Greenbush, N.Y.) finished just ahead of Nicole Whalen (Warwick, N.Y.) in the 1000-meter run. Corr finished .20 seconds ahead of Whalen for the third place finish. Catherine Parker (Westford, Mass.) placed third in the 1-mile run with a time of 5:09.04. Rebecca Haley (Dover, N.H.) took a third place finish in the 800-meter event. Her time was 2:19.62.

Jessica Descartes (Randolph, Mass.) and Chia-Ling Wu (Merrimack, N.H.) placed third and fourth respectively in the weight throw competition. Descartes tossed a distance of 15.15 meters with Wu throwing a distance of 15.02 meters. Descartes contributed additional points for UNH with a sixth place finish in the shot put event. Amanda Cmielewski (Englishtown, N.J.) placed just ahead of Descartes in the same event with a throw of 10.85 meters and a fifth place finish.

The women's indoor track team will be back in action next weekend to conclude the regular season, when they play host to the University of Vermont Catamounts at Sweet Oval at noon on Saturday.
