DURHAM, N.H.- The University of New Hampshire women's track and field team was defeated Saturday afternoon by the University of Maine. The Wildcats had first place finishers in seven of the 17 events.
In the track events, sophomore Melissa Murphy (Rockland, Mass.) finished first in the 55 meter dash with a time of 7.50 after tying for first in the preliminaries with 7.56. Senior Kristen Meisner (Nashua, N.H.) finished first in the 500m run with a time of 1:18.15.
In the 1500m run, sophomores Nicole Whalen (Warwick, N.Y.) and Sarah Patsos (Meriden, Conn.) captured first and second place. Whalen finished in 4:50.38 and Parsos finished in 5:07.17. Whalen also had a second place finish in the 3000m run behind her teammate and first place finisher, junior Jennifer Busse (Hollis, N.H.). Busse clocked in at 10:37.32 and Whalen was right on her heels with 10:37.82. UNH also finished first in the 4x400m relay with a time of 4:07.32.
Senior Kaitlin Norberg (Medfield, Mass.) and freshman Kiah Quarles (Derry, N.H.) finished second and third respectively in the 55m hurdles after finishing second and third in the preliminaries. Norberg's final time was 8.68 and Quarles' time was 8.70. In the 800m run and the 1000m run, the Wildcats also took the second and third spots. In the 800m run, freshman Rebecca Haley (Dover, N.H.) finished with a time of 2:21.91 and sophomore Amanda Schweizer (Merrimack, N.H.) finished in 2:22.90. In the 1000m run, senior Michelle Zitta (East Swanzey, N.H.) finished with 3:11.28 and senior Liz Stokinger (Hampstead, N.H.) crossed the finish line at 3:15.62.
In the field events, junior Lauren Tebbetts (Waterville, Maine) finished first in the pole vault with 3.35m and senior Jessica Descartes (Randolph, Mass.) and junior Chia-Ling Wu (Merrimack, N.H.) took the top two spots in the weight throw. Decartes finished with 14.63m and Wu finished with 14.11m.
The 'Cats compete again on Jan. 7 at 1 p.m. when they travel to the University of Rhode Island.
