BOSTON-- The University of New Hampshire women's indoor track and field team was picked third in the preseason America East Coaches Poll that was released Thursday by the conference office.
The Wildcats garnered 50 points as voted on by the nine league coaches. Boston University was picked to win the conference with 62 points and six first-place votes.
The 'Cats placed fourth at the America East Championship last February with 102 points.
The 05-06 New Hampshire track team is captained by senior Chia-Ling Wu (Merrimack, N.H.), who will lead the 'Cats in both the shot-put and the weight.
Sophomores Kiah Quarles (Derry, N.H.), Cathy Parker (Westford, Mass.), Rebecca Haley (Dover, N.H.) and Amy Roccio (Beverly, Mass.) all earned points for the Wildcats at the 2005 Indoor Championship.
Quarles took second in the long jump with a leap of 5.44 meters, while Parker took fourth in the one-mile run (5:03.91) in the 2005 America East indoor championships.
Junior Nicki Whalen (Warwick, N.Y.), senior Chelsea Corr (East Greenbush, N.Y.) and senior Lauren Tebbetts (Waterville, Maine) will also be key contributors for the Wildcats this season.Whalen and Corr finished fifth and sixth respectively in the 1000-meter at 2:57.57 and 2:58.26 in the '05 conference championship, while Tebbetts' 3.15 meters in the pole vault was sixth best.
Haley, Parker, Whalen and junior Kim Usseglio (Watertown, Mass.) were all members of the team that placed second in the distance medley relay with a time of 11:51.62 in last year's championship.
The Wildcat track team opens its season Friday, Dec. 2nd at the Rhody Pentathlon at the University of Rhode Island.
