Read and Biron run in first women's steeplechase for UNH

DURHAM, N.H. - Sophomore Lesley Read (Dover, N.H.) and junior Suzzane Biron (Keene, N.H.) recently kicked off the University of New Hampshire track team's 2001 outdoor track season by competing in the first-ever women's steeplechase by a Wildcat athlete.

At the Southern Connecticut State University Invitational on Saturday, Read finished second with a time 11:42.80, approximately 19 seconds behind the winner, Nicole Pelletier of Maine. Biron finished fifth with a time of 12:08.70.

The women's 3000m steeplechase will replace the 3000m run at the NCAA Championships and was recently given world record status by the International Amateur Athletic Federation, track and field's governing body.

The 3000m women's steeplechase is run on a 400m track in which the runners clear a set of 30 inch barriers 28 times and a 30 inch water jump seven times.
