CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - The University of New Hampshire women's volleyball lost 3-1 in the opening round of State Farm Illini Classic to host University of Illinois on Friday night at Huff Hall. The game scores were 6-15, 15-11, 8-15 and 7-15.

With the loss UNH drops to 4-5 overall on the year, while Illinois improves to 8-2 with the victory.

The 'Cats played tough defense all night long, but the Big Ten foe played great offense down the stretch to pull out the victory. In the match, UNH was led by Senior co-captain Kim Mirts-Poen (Essex, Iowa) who notched team-high 13 kills and 11 digs, while seniors Jillian Ross (Naperville, Ill.) and Jen Walker (Fulton, N.Y.) also put up solid numbers with 12 and 11 kills respectively. Senior setter Stacy Barnett (Crystal Lake, Ill.) posted 37 assists and five digs in the loss for the Wildcats. For Illinois, Betsy Spicer recorded a match-high 24 kills and chipped in with eight digs. Shadia Haddad and Sue Webber also helped lead the Illini to victory with 22 and 18 kills respectively. Setter Heather Wilson kept the Illinois offense rolling with 66 assists and 16 digs.

UNH returns to action tomorrow at 6 p.m. to face University of Milwaukee-Wisconsin in the consolation match of the tournament. At 8 p.m, Illinois will play Ball State in the State Farm Illini Championship match.
