DURHAM, N.H. – Head coach Robert Hoppler of the University of New Hampshire women's cross country team has announced that seniors Elise Beattie (Woodstock, Ill.) and Anne Twombly (Exeter, N.H.) will captain the team in 2013.
For Beattie, it will be the second consecutive year she has captained the squad. In 2011, she finished 10th in the America East Cross Country Championship. In 2012, she finished as the America East Conference runner up in the 5K at the conference indoor championships, recording a time of 17:15.62. At the 2013 outdoor championships, Beattie finished third in the same event as she broke the plane with a time of 17:31.50.
In 2012, Twombly finished sixth at the America East Championships. She also enjoyed a successful 2013 track season as she finished third in the 800 meter run at the conference outdoor championships (2:09.65). At the New England Championships, the Granite State native took gold in the 1,500 run, breaking the tape with a time of 4:29.44.
Both were members of the record setting distance medley relay squad at the New England Championships, setting a new mark of 11:36.04. The previous record of 11:39.29 stood for 11 years.
