BOSTON, Mass. -- The University of New Hampshire women's cross country took first place at the New England Championships Saturday afternoon as the squad topped 19 additional teams to earn the crown with 50 points. The race took place at Franklin Park in Boston, Mass.
"We are very excited about the win at the New England Championships," said head coach Robert Hoppler. "This win is another chapter in UNH cross country's tradition of success.
Freshman Elinor Purrier (Montgomery, Vt.) led the Wildcats as she finished third overall with a time of 17:33. Laura Rose Donegan (Melbourne, Australia) finished the race fifth to a time of 17:36 while senior co-captain Anne Twombly (Exeter, N.H.) came in 11th with a result of 17:52.
Chelsey Serrano (Manchester, N.H.) and senior co-captain Elise Beattie (Woodstock, Ill.) finished in tandem in 15th and 16th, respectively. Serrano completed the 5K course with a time of 18:03 while Beattie was hot on her heels with a time of 18:06. Samantha Blais (Lyndenborough, N.H.) finished 28th to a time of 18:25 while Cayla Pellegrini (Derry, N.H.) came in 30th of 133 runners with a time of 18:27.
In 2011, the women's outdoor track and field team won the New England Championship title. Beattie and Pellegrini were members of the title squad.
The team will have two weeks off between the next race as the team travels to the Central Connecticut State University Mini Meet on Oct. 25. The competition begins at 3:30 p.m.
