CAMBRIDGE, Mass.- The University of New Hampshire women’s swimming and diving team was chosen third in the America East Preseason Coaches Poll as recently release by the conference. UMBC Retrievers have been picked to win the 2009 America East Swimming and Diving Championship for the third consecutive year, according to the preseason coaches’ poll, but not without a little competition. Boston University Terriers (32 points, two first-place votes) are nipping at the heels of the defending Retrievers (35 points, four first place votes), trailing them by only three points in the poll.  New Hampshire (24) was picked to finish third, just edging past Vermont (23) in fourth, with Maine (15), Binghamton (11) and Stony Brook (7) rounding out the league.

UNH HONOR ROLL

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – A total of 201 University of New Hampshire student-athletes were named to the 2008 America East Winter/Spring Academic Honor Roll for recording a grade point average of 3.0 or above in that winter/spring semester, the league announced Thursday. Of the 201 honored, 113 of those were also named to the Commissioner’s Honor Roll for possessing a gpa of at least 3.5, the most of any of the other institution.
      In the nine-member America East conference, only Binghamton University (251 honorees) had a higher number of student-athletes recognized. The University at Albany (198), the University of Vermont (197) and Stony Brook University (188) rounded out the top five.

CAMBRIDGE, MASS— Student-athletes at the University of New Hampshire continue to excel in the classroom and as a result the Wildcats finished second in the running for the 2007-08 America East Academic Cup with an impressive cumulative grade point average of 3.12.  UNH has won the Academic Cup twice, in 1998-99 and 1999-2000.
    The University of Vermont narrowly edged out UNH to take home the hardware with a 3.14 GPA.
    The University of Maine (3.10), Stony Brook University (3.06) and Binghamton University (3.04) were the other institutions in America East to compile grade point averages of 3.00 or better in 2007-08.

STANDINGS

WESTLAKE, Ohio
– The National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics recently announced that the University of New Hampshire ranks 81st out of 365 Division I schools in the NACDA Directors’ Cup standings at the end of the winter sport season.
     The Wildcats have amassed 162 points, including the 25 points they tallied during the fall season. The ski team, which stands 11th overall, provided 57 points, while the third-ranked women’s hockey team supplied 55 points and the ninth-ranked men’s hockey team kicked in another 25.

DURHAM, N.H.- Joshua Willman, head coach of the University of New Hampshire’s women’s swimming and diving team, has announced the hiring of Jarrod Zwirko as assistant swim coach, effective June 1.

Zwirko, a 2004 graduate of the University of New Hampshire, was a two-year captain for the Wildcats, specializing in middle-distance and still holds two UNH records for relays. As an athlete Zwirko was an 11-time finalist at the America East championships and was runner-up in the 500-yard freestyle in 2002. Zwirko also served as SAAC President as an undergraduate and was twice nominated for UNH Athlete of the Year.

DURHAM, N.H.- The University of New Hampshire women’s swimming and diving team recently held their annual awards banquet at the Sheraton Inn in Portsmouth, N.H. The evening highlighted the accomplishments of the 2007-2008 season.
    Individuals recognized for exceptional seasons included Amy Perrault (Kirkland Lake, Ontario) who was selected as Rookie of the Year. Perrault recently returned from the Canadian Olympic Trials and had a very successful campaign at the America East Championships where she was selected as Rookie of the Meet for her impressive swims including a win in the 100-yard backstroke and record setting leadoff swim in the 200 medley relay.

DURHAM, N.H. – Amy Perrault (Kirkland Lake, Ontario), a swimmer for the University of New Hampshire women’s swimming and diving team was recently invited by Swimming Canada to participate in the Canadian Olympic trials this week at the Olympic Park Pool in Montreal, Quebec.
    Perrault qualified for the trials with her impressive times in 100-meter backstroke and 200-meter backstroke in competition. However, the freshman sensation will not only participate in the backstroke at the trials, as she will also partake in the 100-meterfreestyle, 100-meter fly and the 200-meter individual medley.

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — The America East recently named 27 student-athletes to the 2008 Swimming and Diving All-Academic Team based on their athletic and their academic achievements in the 2007-08 season.
    University of New Hampshire’s Kary Goodman (Windham, Maine), the female senior honored at the conference championship for accumulating the most points in her four-year career, was selected as a member of the academic squad. Other Wildcats honored were Evelyn Yuen (Princeton, N.J.), Deanna Petchonka (Ridgefield, Conn.), Christine Tartaglia (Brewster, N.Y.).

PITTSBURGH- The University of New Hampshire women’s swimming and diving team, with 323 points, placed fifth at the ECAC Championships held in Pittsburgh this weekend. Central Connecticut State University, who the Wildcats defeated earlier this season, took first place in the championships with 425 points. Rider University was second with 400.5 points, followed by Marist College (379) and America East foe University of Vermont with 345.
    Senior Deanna Petchonka (Ridgefield, Conn.) earned fifth in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 52.91. She also placed fifth in the 100-yard butterfly, touching in at 57.69. Senior Christine Tartaglia (Brewster, N.Y.) defeated all swimmers during the first two turns of the 200-yard breaststroke, but fell behind to finish in a time of 2:27.33, taking third place. She earned fifth in the 100 breast with a time of 1:07.61, just seven-hundredths of a second behind the fourth-place finisher.

ORONO, Maine- The University of New Hampshire women’s swimming and diving team placed third at the America East Championships held this past weekend in Orono, Maine. The Wildcats were honored with two awards as Amy Perrault (Kirkland Lake, Ontario) was selected Rookie of the Meet, while New Hampshire's Kary Goodman (South Windham, Maine) won the Coaches Award for most points scored by a female over four years of competition with 212 points.
