DURHAM, N.H.— The University of New Hampshire volleyball team will be the host of its annual Blue/White Scrimmage this Saturday, Aug. 9. The action is set to begin at 8:30 p.m. at Lundholm Gymnasium.
The game will feature all the returning players as well as the incoming freshman class. Originally started to reward volleyball campers at the conclusion of camp, the event has been opened to the public and greater Durham community. The scrimmage will be a single game to 25 points and will include music and public address like UNH regular-season matches.

BIG RAPIDS, Mich. -- Head Coach Jill Hirschinger of the University of New Hampshire volleyball team is being enshrined into the Ferris State University Bulldog Athletics Hall of Fame Class of 2008, which will be inducted this fall. The six-member group was announced July 10 by Ferris State. Hirschinger is being honored for her impressive 12-year coaching tenure with the Bulldogs from 1984-95. Earlier this year, Hirschinger was inducted into the Utah State Hall of Fame along with the rest of the 1978 National Championship volleyball team.

CAMBRIDGE, MASS— Student-athletes at the University of New Hampshire continue to excel in the classroom and as a result the Wildcats finished second in the running for the 2007-08 America East Academic Cup with an impressive cumulative grade point average of 3.12. UNH has won the Academic Cup twice, in 1998-99 and 1999-2000.
The University of Vermont narrowly edged out UNH to take home the hardware with a 3.14 GPA.
The University of Maine (3.10), Stony Brook University (3.06) and Binghamton University (3.04) were the other institutions in America East to compile grade point averages of 3.00 or better in 2007-08.

TORONTO -- Junior middle blocker Kirsten Bates (Calgary, Alberta) of the University of New Hampshire volleyball team finished second at the Volleyball Canada U-21 National Championships last week in Toronto, Ontario. Bates and her partner Katelyn Archer, from Grant MacEwan College in Edmonton, Alberta, will serve as alternates for Canada at the 2008 World Championship in England.

DURHAM, N.H. – The University of New Hampshire women’s volleyball team played host to another successful “Volley 4 Holly” event on Wednesday, May 14. The fourth annual “Volley 4 Holly” tournament raised over $1,500 for the Holly Young Fund, while close to 30 teams competed including representatives from all 20-varsity programs in the athletic department.
The event was created to raise money for Wildcat volleyball player Holly Young, who passed away on Jan. 24 of this year after a courageous three-year battle with Ewing's Sarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer. The funds raised at the event will go to Holly Young Fund.

Pauline Acres (Manhattan Beach, Calif.), Jessy Dick (Lethbridge, Alberta), Christie Dorch (Friendswood, Texas), Taylor Dressing (Gillette, N.J.), Amy Keding (Northbrook, Ill.), Lauren Laquerre (Concord, N.H.) and Starsha Tunstall (Providence, R.I.) have all committed to UNH and will join the Wildcats in the fall of 2008.

WESTLAKE, Ohio – The National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics recently announced that the University of New Hampshire ranks 81st out of 365 Division I schools in the NACDA Directors’ Cup standings at the end of the winter sport season.
The Wildcats have amassed 162 points, including the 25 points they tallied during the fall season. The ski team, which stands 11th overall, provided 57 points, while the third-ranked women’s hockey team supplied 55 points and the ninth-ranked men’s hockey team kicked in another 25.

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The University of New Hampshire volleyball team completed its spring season by participating in the Rochester Hot Shots Collegiate Beach Challenge on April 26.
The invitational, which served as the first-ever indoor beach competition for college teams, saw a total of 21 pairings compete in the double-sand event. The Wildcats were joined by CAA foe Delaware, America East foes Binghamton, Albany and a team from the University of Montreal.

DURHAM, N.H. — The University of New Hampshire volleyball team went an impressive 9-1 in competition at the UNH tournament last weekend at Lundholm Gymnasium. The Wildcats opened the day with six-straight games won and closed out the day with a three-game winning streak.
The Wildcats opened the day with sweep against a UNH alumni team (25-20, 25-12) and followed that up with a two-game sweeps of Boston College (25-19, 25-19) and Rhode Island (25-12, 25-18). UNH dropped game one to Maine, 21-25, but rallied with a decisive victory in game two, 25-12). The Wildcats closed out the day with a sweep of Dartmouth (25-20, 25-18).

DURHAM, N.H. – Senior tri-captain Jessica Compton (Woodridge, Ill.) of the University of New Hampshire volleyball team was named the Holly Young Most Valuable Player at the 2007 team awards banquet at Holloway Commons on the UNH campus on Saturday night. The banquet served as a fitting conclusion to a day full of activities that highlighted the accomplishments of the Wildcat volleyball program.
Earlier in the day the program took time to honor and celebrate the memory of Holly Young. Young, a three-year member of the Wildcat volleyball program, passed away on Jan. 24 of this year after a courageous three-year battle with Ewing's Sarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer. UNH volleyball honored Young’s memory by planting a tree in the Memory Walk, retiring Young’s jersey (#4) and participating in the Relay 4 Life on campus. In addition, the Most Valuable Player award has been named in Young’s honor.
