DURHAM, N.H. – Junior Caitlin Bucksbaum (Mendon, Vt.) scored the game winner in the 81st minute as the University of New Hampshire women's soccer team defeated the University of Vermont, 3-2, Thursday afternoon at Virtue Field.
The Wildcats won both America East contests to begin conference play this season, improving their record to 4-5-3 overall. Vermont dropped its record to 4-5-1, 1-1-0 AE after entering the game on a two-game win streak.
Sophomore Brooke Murphy (Monson, Mass.) passed a through ball into the box to Bucksbaum in the 81st minute, where the Vermont native buried the chance for the game winner.
Murphy led the team in shots (four) and dished the game-winning assist. Senior Caroline Murray (New Canaan, Conn.) rifled two shots with an assist. Senior Kirsten O'Neil (Hampton, N.H.) notched the second goal of the game on her only shot in the contest. Junior Mimi Borkan (Medfield, Mass.) made fives saves in net, improving her record to 4-5-3 overall.
New Hampshire got on the board in the 20th minute when Murray made a cross in the box that was misplayed by Vermont's Alex Jenkins and wound up in the back of the net for an own goal.
Both teams played strong for the rest of the half and the Wildcats held a 1-0 lead over the Catamounts at the break.
It took 47 seconds in the second frame for Vermont to equalize. Nikki McFarland recorded her fourth goal of the season when she beat Borkan 1-on-1 off a feed from Colby Snyder.
In the 54th minute McFarland scored again, burying the go-ahead goal with an unassisted look from inside the penalty area, giving Vermont a 2-1 lead.
O'Neil responded, scoring her first of the season in the 67th minute off a corner kick attempt from Murray. The Vermont keeper got a piece of the cross, but it wasn't enough as O'Neil finished back post to bring the score even at two apiece.
The Catamount's McFarland recorded her two goals off three shots. Caitie Green matched the team high with three shots and dished an assist. Goalkeeper Ally Ramos made seven saves in the loss.
New Hampshire returns home to host the University at Albany on Sunday Oct. 4 (2 p.m.) at Bremner Field. During the pre-game ceremonys, the Wildcats will recognize their five seniors for their contributions at UNH.
