DURHAM, N.H. -- The University of New Hampshire volleyball team maintained its unblemished America East record after withstanding a third-set challenge from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County on Friday night at Lundholm Gymnasium.
The set scores were 25-17, 25-23, 19-25 and 25-23.
The Wildcats upped their overall record to 13-7 and 5-0 in America East play. UMBC drops to 8-11, 2-3. UNH extends its unbeaten streak to a season-high seven matches. Additionally, New Hampshire has won 16 straight contests over conference opponents.
Senior outside hitter Abby Brinkman (Brecksville, Ohio) hammered a season-high 15 kills to lead the Wildcats. Classmate Tori Forrest (Powder Springs, Ga.) notched her ninth double-double of the season, tallying 14 kills and 14 digs. Junior middle blocker Demi Muses (Orangevale, Calif.) turned in 14 kills, five digs, four blocks and three service aces. Junior Keelin Severtson (Delray Beach, Fla.), the reigning America East Setter of the Week, dished out 49 assists to direct the offense. Senior defensive specialist Madison Lightfoot (Clarkston, Mich.) chalked up a team-high 16 digs to secure the backline.
Freshman outside hitter Mackenzie Morgen registered a double-double effort of 13 kills and 11 digs for UMBC. Junior middle blocker Zoya Trendafilova also registered 13 kills in the setback. Rookie setters Claudia Lopez and Krytsia Negron also achieved double-doubles. Lopez logged 23 assists and 12 digs while Negron posted 16 helpers and 10 digs. Freshman defensive specialist Carola De Jesus shoveled out 16 attacks.
New Hampshire was firing on all cylinders in the first frame, landing 17 kills on 32 attempts with one error to register a .500 hitting percentage. After trading the first six exchanges, UNH bolted out to a 9-4 lead capped off by a service ace from senior outside hitter Maggie Kenney (Merrimack, N.H.). The Retrievers tried to slow down the Wildcat scoring barrage with a timeout. However, the blue and white stretched its lead to double digits at 19-9. UMBC managed to decrease the UNH lead down to single digits, but kills from Brinkman, Forrest and Muses down the stretch punctuated a prolific offensive start by the Wildcats.
The second stanza was closely contested, featuring 13 tie scores and seven lead changes. The Wildcats and Retrievers slugged it out throughout the frame as neither side could establish a lead larger than three points. Tangled at the 19 mark, the visitors snapped the tie with a kill followed by a Wildcat error. After a breather by New Hampshire, the home team battled back to tie the frame at 23 apiece sparked by a Brinkman kill. Muses struck a timely ace to put the 'Cats in position to take the set. An attack error by the Retrievers lifted the Wildcats to the second set win and a 2-0 lead into the locker rooms.
UMBC was ready to challenge UNH in the third frame, unwilling to succumb in straight sets. The Retrievers engineered a 10-6 start and forced the Wildcats to huddle at the 13-7 mark. New Hampshire clawed back within a point at 17-16, taking advantage of attacking miscues by UMBC. After a timeout by the visitor coaching staff, the Retrievers mustered an 8-3 run to close out the third frame and force a fourth set.
UNH found themselves in another close battle as the decisive frame had 12 tie scores and seven lead changes. UMBC held a slim 10-8 advantage out of the chute, but UNH swiftly tied the set at the 11 mark. Neither team could establish a sizeable lead as the score rose to 20-20. Senior middle blocker Cassidy Croci (Sylvania, Ohio) and Kenney broke the deadlock with a combo lock to give the 'Cats a 21-20 edge. Brinkman added to the lead with a kill as UMBC called timeout late in the match. The visitors would not fade away quietly, battling back to even the game at the 22 and 23 marks. Muses slashed a timely kill to force match point. UNH closed out the match as Kenney landed the match-deciding point from the service line to seal the deal.
