ALBANY, N.Y. – The University of New Hampshire men's soccer team fell 1-0 in double overtime to the University at Albany, Saturday night at Bob Ford Field.
The Wildcats fell to 8-3-3 on the season and 2-2-1 in the America East. The Great Danes improved to 8-7-1 overall and 3-2 in conference.
The game-deciding goal came in the 107th minute on a set piece from 40 yards out. Senior Philip Persson striked a cross in the box that freshman Carlos Clark touched to the right side and sophomore Moosah Khanat ripped top right for the game-winner.
For UNH, senior Fazal Nabi (Portland, Maine) recorded four shots, one on goal. Junior Chris Wingate (Hovik, Norway) and senior Ben Ramin (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) totaled two shots apiece. Senior goalkeeper Ryan Carpenter (Newmarket, N.H.) dropped his record to 7-3-3 overall and 2-2-1 in conference.
In the opening half, Nabi ripped the game's opening shot in the eighth minute, which was smothered by UAlbany sophomore goalkeeper Eric Orologio. The Wildcats held a 5-2 shot advantage in the first half but the score was even at 0-0 after the first period.
In the 52nd minute freshman Chris Arling (Wingham, N.H.) drilled the Great Dane's post and the ball bounced out of scoring territory. The Wildcats then had back-to-back shots blocked in the UAlbany zone in the 73rd and 74th minutes, leaving the score tied after regulation.
In the first overtime period, junior Duff Thomson (Newton, N.H.) made the single shot that needed saving for the 'Cats but again, the score was tied with zeroes on the scoreboard as time expired.
On the Great Dane's second shot in the final overtime stanza, UAlbany took advantage of its chance following a UNH foul for the win.
Khanat recorded two shots along with his lone goal for the Great Danes. Persson also notched two shots with his assist. Goalkeeper Oroligio made three saves, improving his record to 6-2-0 overall.
With three regular season games remaining for the Wildcats, New Hampshire will host Dartmouth College on Tuesday, Oct. 27 (7 p.m.) at Bremner Field.
