DURHAM, N.H. – Hilary Witt, who recently completed her first year as University of New Hampshire women's ice hockey head coach, announced that Sara Carlson (Hutchinson, Minn.) will captain the 2015-16 UNH Wildcats team with Heather Kashman (Edmonton, Alberta) and Cassandra Vilgrain (Calgary, Alberta) serving as alternate captains.
Carlson, co-President of UNH's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, was one of two captains as a junior on the 2014-15 squad. She skated primarily as a forward but dressed as a defenseman for three consecutive October games and returned to the blue line for the Hockey East quarterfinal series – that selflessness was a testament to her team-first attitude. Carlson recorded two goals and six assists for eight points in 36 games and that included 2-4-6 in 21 league games. She tied her personal bests in both assists (two) and points (two) against the University of Maine (Feb. 1). In 104 games through three seasons, Carlson has compiled 11 goals and 25 assists for 36 points.
Carlson was named to the Hockey East All-Academic Team each of her first two years and has been named recipient of the Sue Merz Award at the UNH women's hockey team banquet the past two seasons.
Kashman will reprise her role as alternate captain after holding that title as a junior forward in the 2014-15 season. She skated in 33 of 36 games last year with three goals, including a game-winning tally Feb. 1 vs. Maine, and two assists for five points. Kashman centered the second or third line, most of the time with Carlson as her left wing, in 28 games; she was a left winger the other five games. In 100 career games as a Wildcat, Kashman has 15 goals and 14 assists for 29 points. She made the Hockey East All-Academic Team as a freshman and sophomore.
Vilgrain, who was one of two Wildcats sitting alongside Witt when she was introduced as head coach last April, opened the 2014-15 season at center but saw the majority of her playing time as a right winger. She tallied five goals and six assists for 11 points in 34 games as a sophomore forward; those numbers included 3-5-8 in 20 Hockey East league games. Vilgrain scored two game-winning goals, including the one in Game 1 of the quarterfinals.
