Women’s Soccer Earns 2-0 Win, Third–Consecutive Shutout Over Holy Cross
8/27/2015 9:56:00 PM | Women's Soccer
DURHAM, N.H. – Sophomore forward Brooke Murphy (Monson, Mass.) scored two goals and junior goalkeeper Mimi Borkan (Medfield, Mass.) earned her third-straight shutout as the University of New Hampshire women's soccer team toppled the College of Holy Cross, 2-0, at Bremner Field.
The Wildcats (1-0-2) secured their first victory of 2015 and remain unbeaten this season. The Crusaders (0-2-1) were shutout for the first time this year.
Murphy led the team with a pair of goals on three shots. Senior forward Caroline Murray (New Canaan, Conn.) notched an assist in the game's opening tally and rifled three shots on the night. Borkan made four stops in net to cement a 310-minute shutout streak this season. UNH outshot Holy Cross 13-6.
The Crusaders' Brooke Holle made five saves in net to hold off a larger deficit while six different Holy Cross players tallied one shot throughout the 90 minutes.
Freshman Sydney Griffin (Hinsdale, Ill.) started the scoring opportunities when she dished to senior midfielder Gabrielle Sloan (Stow, Mass.), who shot just wide right off a one timer at the 34th minute in the first half.
Murphy recorded her first goal of the season, 36-minutes into the contest, off a pass from Murray. The shot went off the right post and settled in the back of the net for a 1-0 Wildcat lead.
Holy Cross was unable to get aggressive scoring chances all night as the Crusaders split the halves with three shots apiece and were unable to earn a corner kick opportunity.
Murray was fouled in the goalie box in the 34th minute of the second half on an offensive rush. Murphy stepped in to take the penalty kick, and buried the shot bottom left just inside the post for a 2-0 lead.
This is the first time in program history the 'Cats have started a season with three-consecutive shut outs.
New Hampshire travels to Siena College on Aug. 30 (1 p.m.). The next home game on Bremner Field is Sept. 11 when Temple University is in town to continue non-conference play.
