Men's Soccer Downs Hartwick in Season Opener, 2-1

DURHAM, N.H. – Freshmen Chris Arling (Windham, N.H.) and Alex Valencia (Tracy, Calif.) of the University of New Hampshire men's soccer team each scored a goal as the Wildcats defeated Hartwick College, 2-1, Friday night at Bremner Field. It was the season opener for both teams.
Senior A.J. Albers (Eagan, Minn.) nearly got the Wildcats on the board in the sixth minute of the game as he was set up by junior Chris Wingate (Hovik, Norway) in the box. Albers ripped a one-timer on net, but Hartwick goalkeeper Lenny Wilson came up with the save.
Senior Fazal Nabi (Portland, Maine) ripped a shot on net in the just over midway through the first half that beat the keeper, but a Hartwick defender was there to block the shot to keep the match scoreless.
Arling's goal came in the 24th minute of play as the rookie gave UNH a 1-0 lead. Senior back Lukas Goerigk (Berlin, Germany) laced a pass up field to Arling in stride who then carried it into the box. He fired a shot to the right side of the net for the goal, the first of his career.
Valencia gave the Wildcats a 2-0 lead in the 40th minute of play as he too scored the first of his career. The rookie received a pass and ripped a shot with his left foot past Wilson to the right side of the net.
At the end of the first half, the Wildcats held a 2-0 lead and a 7-3 advantage in shots.
Hartwick got on the board in the 51st minute of play as Ross MacKinnon found the back of the net. He gained control of the ball nearly 25 yards out and fired a shot to the high left side of the net.
In the 61st minute, senior Jimmy Petruccelli (Newfields, N.H.) saw a bouncing ball 30 yards out and blasted a one-time volley just high of the crossbar. In the closing minutes, Wingate nearly got a third goal for UNH when he fired a shot on net, but it was saved by Wilson.
At the end of the game, the Wildcats downed Hartwick, 2-1.
Senior goalkeeper Ryan Carpenter (Newmarket, N.H.) earned the win in net as he allowed just one goal. Wilson made four saves on six shots faced. The Wildcats outshot the Hawks by a tally of 10-7.
UNH is back in action on Sunday, Aug. 30 as the squad travels to Marist. Kickoff is slated for 5 p.m.
