Women’s Soccer Falls to Siena 2-0 for First Loss This Season

LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. – The University of New Hampshire women's soccer team fell 2-0 to Siena College for the first loss of the season, Sunday afternoon at Siena Field.
Both teams now have a matching record of 1-1-2.
Sophomore forward Brooke Murphy (Monson, Mass.) recorded six shots on the afternoon. Senior forward Caroline Murray (New Canaan, Conn.) and freshman forward Sydney Griffin (Hinsdale, Ill.) each recorded three shots. Junior goalkeeper Mimi Borkan (Medfield, Mass.) had her scoreless streak snapped at 350 minutes and 23 seconds and recorded six saves.
Siena College's Kelsey Horst and Gabby Albano each notched a goal. Madison Vasquez led the team with four shots and goalkeeper Liz Rogan finished the match with nine saves for her second shutout of the season.
New Hampshire placed pressure on the defense early when they rattled of six shots in eight minutes including a Murphy shot that hit the crossbar in the 23rd minute.
In the 40th minute, Borkan's streak was broken by a goal from Albano, assisted by Meghan Riccardi. There was a scrum in the UNH box with the ball bouncing around until Riccardi found an lane and dished the ball to Albano who finished on the left side of the net.
At the 54th minute, the Saints received a corner kick on the left side. Following the kick, the ball bounced around the box and eventually was volleyed by Horst off the crossbar and into the net.
The Wildcats picked up the offensive pressure following the goal when they rattled off three shots on goal in three minutes from Griffin, Murphy and senior back Kirsten O'Neil (Hampton, N.H.). O'Neil's attempt was on a header, following a corner kick but Rogan was there for the save.
UNH led the game with a 16-13 shot advantage, including nine in the second half to try and reduce the deficit. Rogan recorded four saves in the final 45 minutes to hold off the pressure.
New Hampshire will head to the University of Vermont for the TD Bank Classic Tournament next weekend. The 'Cats battle Quinnipiac University on Sept. 4 (1:30 p.m.) and then take on Kent State University on Sept. 6 (11 a.m.). The Wildcats then return home Sept. 11 (7 p.m.) for a match against Temple University.
