BURLINGTON, Vt. – Junior co-captain Chris Wingate (Hovik, Norway) scored a pair of goals as the University of New Hampshire men's soccer team blanked Central Connecticut State University, 2-0, Friday afternoon at Virtue Field. The team improved its overall record to 3-0-1.
The win came in the first game of the Peter Baldwin Memorial Classic presented by Morgan Stanley and The Windjammer, hosted by the University of Vermont. CCSU fell to 1-2-0 after the loss.
New Hampshire piled on the offense to begin the match as freshman Chris Arling (Windham, N.H.) tallied the first two shots of the game. Both of his attempts were just wide of the net. Wingate notched his first shot of the game in the 11th minute, but CCSU keeper Josef Abele saved the shot. Wildcat keeper Ryan Carpenter (Newmarket, N.H.) made a save on the only shot on goal he faced in the match in the 22nd minute of play. Ryan Taylor notched the attempt for the Blue Devils.
Wingate recorded is first goal of the game in the 25th minute of play to give the Wildcats a 1-0 advantage. Senior Jimmy Petruccelli (Newfields, N.H.) started the play as he fired a corner kick into the box. After a foul on CCSU, the Wildcats were awarded a penalty kick that Wingate buried in the back of the net.
At the end of the first half, New Hampshire held a 1-0 lead over CCSU.
The Wildcats began the second half with the same tempo as the first. In the 52nd minute of play, freshman Alex Valencia (Tracy, Calif.) put a corner kick into the box that Arling connected with, but Abele made a save to end the threat.
In the 58th minute of play, Wingate was awarded another penalty kick. He had Adele faked, but his shot hit the crossbar. Less than a minute later, Wingate got redemption as he received a pass from Arling at the top of the box. Wingate struck a one-time shot to the far corner of the net for his second goal of the day and third of the season. Thanks to solid defense by UNH, the score was ultimately finalized at 2-0.
The Wildcats outshot the Blue Devils by a mark of 11-2, nine of which were on target. New Hampshire also had eight corner kicks to CCSU's five. Adele made seven saves for the Blue Devils.
The Wildcats are back in action on Sunday, Sept. 13 as they take on the University of North Carolina at Asheville. Kickoff is slated for 11 a.m.
