STATE OF THE NEW HAMPSHIRE: The Wildcats enter Friday's league opener with an overall record of 8-7. UNH went 2-1 in the Big Orange Tournament, hosted by Syracuse University. New Hampshire lost at the hands of the Orange in four sets (15-25, 19-25, 25-21, 24-26) to open the tournament Saturday, Sept. 19. The following afternoon, the 'Cats defeated the University at Buffalo (3-0; 25-23, 25-21, 25-22) and United States Naval Academy (3-2; 25-16, 23-25, 19-25, 25-16, 19-17) to conclude the tournament.
Senior outside hitter Tori Forrest (Powder Springs, Ga.) and junior Keelin Severtson (Delray Beach, Fla.) were named to the Big Orange All-Tournament Team for their performance on the weekend. Forrest notched 41 kills and 31 digs in the three matches while Severtson tallied 131 assists while ripping five service aces. Senior defensive specialist Madison Lightfoot (Clarkston, Mich.) became the all-time digs leader, breaking Jen Williams' '05 mark of 1,398 in the sweep over Buffalo. She now has 1,435 digs in her Wildcat career.
Forrest, who was named the America East Player of the Week on Monday, leads New Hampshire in the kills column this season with 2.89 kills per set. She also leads the team with seven double-doubles, bolstered by a 2.81 digs per set average. Junior middle blocker Demi Muses (Orangevale, Calif.) ranks right behind Forrest in kills with 2.86 kills per set. Severtson, the league's Setter of the Week, coordinates the attack for the Wildcats with a team-leading 8.33 assists per set. Lightfoot is the leader behind the block, pacing the Wildcats with 4.11 digs per set. New Hampshire lands 14.24 kills per set and has limited opponents to an America East-best .204 hitting percentage.
SCOUTING HARTFORD: The Hawks net an overall record of 0-14 heading into Friday's contest. Most recently, Hartford went winless in the Central Connecticut State University Tournament. The Hawks fell to the tournament host Blue Devils on Sept. 18 in the first match, losing in three sets (19-25, 16-25, 15-25). The next day, Hartford conceded contests to the College of the Holy Cross (3-1; 21-25, 25-27, 25-20, 24-26) and Brown University (3-1; 16-25, 8-25, 13-25).
Freshman outside hitter Paulina Modestow is a threat on the offensive end, registering a team-high 2.46 kills pet set. Modestow is also a force on the defensive side of the ball with 108 digs, which ranks second on the team. The Hawks' leader in assists is Astrid Manqual, who averages 6.44 per set. Junior defensive specialist Paola Llerandi anchors the backcourt, scooping up 2.83 digs per set. As a team, Hartford averages 8.07 kills and 11.50 digs per set. Mitch Kallick enters his first season as head volleyball coach of the Hawks.
ALL-TIME SERIES VS. HARTFORD: The Wildcats are 37-3 against the Hawks, winning the most recent match in consecutive sets at Lundholm Gymnasium on Nov. 14, 2014 (25-19, 25-13 and 25-15). UNH has won the last five meetings between the two schools, dropping only three sets dating back to Nov. 9, 2012.
LIGHTFOOT BECOMES ALL-TIME DIGS LEADER: With the Wildcats' victory over Buffalo on Sept. 20, Lightfoot became the program's all-time digs leader. The senior co-captain surpassed Jen Williams '05 on the career leaderboard, who recorded 1,398 digs in her career. Lightfoot now boasts 1,435 digs and counting in her illustrious career. Lightfoot owns two of the top 10 single-season school records for digs, which includes tying the single-season digs mark of 560 just a year ago.
DEFEND DURHAM: New Hampshire boasts a 23-8 record at Lundholm Gymnasium dating back to the start of the 2013 season. Additionally, the Wildcats are 27-8 when hosting America East teams since 2011.
FIVE-TIME CHAMPS: The Wildcats secured the America East title on their home court for the second straight year after defeating the University at Albany in four sets on Nov. 22, 2014 (25-22, 19-25, 27-25, 25-13). UNH has won the conference crown five times; all under the tutelage of head coach Jill Hirschinger. Additionally, all five titles of the program's titles have been won at Lundholm Gymnasium.
ROLLING DOUBLES: Forrest racked up 10 double-doubles to lead the team in 2014. She looks to eclipse that figure as the co-captain has a team-high seven double-doubles through 15 matches. Muses (four) and Severtson (three) have also achieved double-double performances this season.
HIRSCHINGER BY THE NUMBERS: In 36 years as a head coach, Hirschinger is one of just 12 active coaches that have recorded 700 wins or more. She recorded win No. 700 on Sept. 20, 2014 against the University of Rhode Island in a five-set battle. Already the program's winningest coach, Hirschinger earned her 300th career win at UNH when the team captured a four-set win over Binghamton University on Nov. 2, 2014.
