Volleyball Sweeps Hartford in America East Opener

DURHAM, N.H. -- The University of New Hampshire volleyball team, on the strength of a season-high 14 services aces, stymied the University of Hartford in three sets Friday evening at Lundholm Gymnasium.
The set scores were 25-12, 25-12 and 25-7.
UNH notches its third sweep of the season and improves to 9-7 in the America East opener. Hartford falls to 0-15, 0-1.
Junior middle blocker Demi Muses (Orangevale, Calif.) paced New Hampshire with seven kills on 13 swings to register a .385 hitting percentage. Abby Brinkman (Brecksville, Ohio), Cassidy Croci (Sylvania, Ohio) and Gabri Olhava (Mount Prospect, Ill.) all contributed four kills. Reigning America East Setter of the Week Keelin Severtson (Delray Beach, Fla.) quarterbacked the offense to a .264 hitting percentage, dishing out 24 assists. Senior defensive specialist Madison Lightfoot (Clarkston, Mich.) shoveled out 10 attacks to lead the defense. Muses and Severtson each contributed four aces. Severtson set a new career-high from the service line while Muses matched her personal best.
Hartford was led by freshman outside hitter Paulina Modestow with three kills and three digs. Shay Worley and Erinn Lavelle tallied three helpers apiece. Junior defensive specialist Paola Llerandi anchored the backline with seven digs.
New Hampshire showcased its offense right out of the gate, registering a .364 hitting percentage in the frame. The 'Cats landed 12 kills on 22 swings with four errors. Senior outside hitter Maggie Kenney (Merrimack, N.H.), Brinkman and Muses all slammed three kills. As a team, UNH ripped five aces from the service line in the opening stanza. The Wildcats and Hawks were in a close battle in set two as the home squad held an 8-5 edge early. New Hampshire pulled away, engineering an 8-3 run to take a 16-9 advantage midway through the stanza. Hartford used both timeouts in order to slow down the blue and white offense. New Hampshire was not phased by the stoppage, cruising to a set one victory.
The Wildcats and Hawks tussled in the early goings of the second frame with UNH leading 7-5. New Hampshire distanced themselves from Hartford, engineering a 7-3 run to take a 14-8 advantage midway through the stanza. UNH continued to inflict damage from the service line, landing five aces in the frame The Hawks could not slow down the Wildcats' scoring barrage as the hosts entered intermission with a two-game advantage.
UNH picked where it left off by sprinting out to a 14-3 lead in the deciding frame. The rookies were called upon to forge the sweep with a 19-6 advantage late in the match. Olhava hammered a kill to up the home score to 20-6. After a combo block by Kenney and Olhava, freshman outside hitter Sarah Shelton (Ellsworth, Maine) joined the scoring with back-to-back kills. The Wildcats closed out the victory with a block and a kill to capture match point and start the league slate with a victory.
UNH embarks on a brief road swing, visiting the University at Albany (Oct. 2; 7 p.m.) and Binghamton University (Oct. 4; 1 p.m.). New Hampshire returns home to welcome the University of Massachusetts Lowell on Sunday, Oct. 11 (1 p.m.).
