DURHAM, N.H. – Meg Flatley (Townsend, Mass.) and Lindsey Nerbonne (Bow, N.H.) scored in the opening six minutes of the game to lead the University of New Hampshire field hockey team to Saturday afternoon's 2-1 victory against UMass Lowell at Memorial Field.
UNH improved to 4-5 overall and 1-0 in America East by remaining unbeaten (3-0) at home this season. UMass Lowell is now 5-3, 0-1. The Wildcats recorded a 17-11 shot advantage while the River Hawks had a 7-6 edge in penalty corners.
Nerbonne recorded a team-high eight shots and scored a goal for the second time in as many days; she has a team-high five goals this season and Flatley is second with four. Melissa Rize (Severn, Md.) recorded five saves, including four in the second half.
UML goalkeeper Kelsey Federico finished with eight saves and Georgia Cowderoy was the River Hawks' goal scorer; she tallied a team-high five shots.
New Hampshire scored on the first scoring threat of the game to take a 1-0 lead at 3:50. Federico stopped Nerbonne's initial shot from the middle of the circle but Faltley corralled the rebound in a scrum deep on the left side and deposited a shot into the cage.
Less than two minutes later, Nerbonne doubled the lead to two goals. Federico once again made the save on the first shot, but Nerbonne collected her own rebound deep on the left side and shoveled a shot across the goal line for a 2-0 lead at 5:25.
The Wildcats generated a corner in the seventh minute and they swung the ball to the top left for Jackie Hozza (Sinking Spring, Pa.), whose shot was blocked in the middle of the circle. Nerbonne pulled in the loose ball and once again she was turned aside by Federico.
UML created its first scoring chance with a corner in the 15th minute and Jessica Walsh's strike from the top left was deflected in the middle of the circle by Torrie Huk over the crossbar.
Four minutes later, the Wildcats created pressure inside the circle and Lynne Lehman (Landisburg, Pa.), positioned low on the left side, tipped a shot wide of the near post.
In the 23rd minute, Cowderoy's direct shot on UML's corner rolled through traffic and wide of the left post. With seven minutes left in the first half, Nerbonne dribbled down the middle of the field and, from the top of the circle, struck a hard, rising shot that sailed over the cage.
UNH took a 2-0 lead into halftime with a 9-4 shot advantage; the visitors outcornered the Wildcats, 3-1, in the opening 35 minutes.
The River Hawks carried play early in the second half and generated a corner with 2:30 elapsed. Watt's blast from the top left was once again redirected by Huk from the middle of the circle over the crossbar. Three minutes later on another corner, Cowderoy rifled a low shot and Rize, laid out on the turf, made a stick save at the left post.
UMass Lowell converted its next corner into a goal to trim the deficit to 2-1 at 43:44. Huk's initial shot was stopped by Rize, but Watt kept the ball in the circle on the top right and swung a pass across to Cowderoy, who lifted a shot into the left side of the cage.
The Wildcats finally broke through the River Hawks' defensive pressure to generate consecutive corners in the 56th minute. On the second attempt, a sequence of passes set up Bensaia's shot from the top right. Federico made the save and then Nerbonne's shot off the rebound was blocked and trickled wide left.
UNH called timeout at 58:33. Four minutes later, a similar series of passes on another corner led to a Bensaia shot from the top right, but this time a charging UML defender blocked the shot away.
With four minutes remaining, Meg Carroll (Mansfield, Mass.) entered the circle on the right wing and she blasted a reverse-stick shot that Federica stopped but yielded a corner for the 'Cats. The battery of Meg Flatley (Townsend, Mass.) and Chandler Giese (Trappe, Pa.) set up Nerbonne's direct shot that was blocked but generated another corner. This time Flatley's insert went directly to Hozza on the top left. Federico stopped that shot and also denied Nerbonne off the rebound.
UNH did not allow the River Hawks to penetrate the circle the rest of the way. Hozza helped seal the victory in the final minute as she gained possession on the defensive end of the field and dribbled to the attacking corner. UML gained control with just under 30 seconds on the clock, but the 'Cats immediately tackled the ball away and pushed back across the 25 line to end the game.
