Men’s Soccer Plays to 1-1 Draw at Columbia

NEW YORK – Senior Fazal Nabi (Portland, Maine) of the University of New Hampshire men's soccer team scored his second goal of the season as the Wildcats battled to a 1-1 double-overtime draw at Columbia University Saturday night. The match took place at Columbia's Rocco B. Commisso Soccer Stadium.
The 'Cats remain unbeaten as the team now stands at 6-0-2 on the season. Columbia moves to 4-1-1 with the draw.
Senior A.J. Albers (Eagan, Minn.) notched the first offensive attempt of the game as he put a header shot on goal in the eighth minute of play. The header was on net, but the team defended it to keep the 'Cats off the board. In the 10th minute, freshman Chris Arling (Windham, N.H.) ripped a shot on net, but Columbia keeper Kyle Jackson made a save on the shot.
The Lions threatened on a corner kick in the 14th minute of play as as Antonio Matarazzo placed a ball into the box that Rhys Williams headed on net, but senior Wildcat keeper Ryan Carpenter (Newmarket, N.H.) made the save.
Junior Riley Ellis (Goffstown, N.H.), who scored his first-career goal in the last game, tried to get the Wildcats on the board in the 31st minute as he fired a shot that went just right of the net. With just under a minute left in the first half, Albers nearly broke the 0-0 tie with a header on net, but Jackson denied the attempt.
At the end of the first half, the Wildcats and Lions were tied, 0-0. Columbia held a 6-5 shot advantage. Four of UNH's shots were on net as opposed to the Lions' two.
In the 66th minute, Ellis kept the offensive pressure coming as he fired a shot on goal, but Jackson made the save. Nabi notched the game's first goal in the 70th minute to give UNH a 1-0 lead. Arling played a cross into the box that Nabi found at the top of the six-yard mark. Nabi then blasted the ball into the right side of the net. It was Arling's third assist of his rookie season.
The Lions responded in the 76th minute as Kynan Rocks tied the game at 1-1 with his first goal of the season. He fired a shot from the top of the box into the left corner of the net. The second half would end in a 1-1 draw, sending the match to overtime.
In the 94th minute of play, senior Jimmy Petruccelli (Newfields, N.H.) lobbed a corner kick into the box that Nabi found and shot, but his attempt was blocked. The Lions threatened with a corner kick with nine second left in the first overtime stanza, but the Wildcats thwarted the attack to send the match to the second overtime period. Neither team recorded a shot in the second overtime as the score was ultimately finalized at 1-1.
Carpenter made a pair of saves in the game as his record now stands at 5-0-2. Jackson made five saves in the match to move his record to 4-1-1. UNH held a 9-8 advantage in the shots category.
The Wildcats begin America East Conference play on Oct. 3 as they travel to the University of Massachusetts Lowell for a 3 p.m. tilt.
