BURLINGTON, Vt. – Sophomore Brooke Murphy (Monson, Mass.) and junior Kelsey Pratt (Milford, Mass.) each scored a goal as the University of New Hampshire women's soccer team defeated Quinnipiac University, 2-1, on day one of the TD Bank Classic at Virtue Field on the University of Vermont Campus.
The 'Cats improved their overall record to 2-1-2 this year while the Bobcats dropped to 2-1 in their first loss of the season.
Murphy secured her third goal of the year and recorded an assist on the afternoon. Senior Caroline Murray (New Canaan, Conn.) registered an assist on the game's opening tally and Pratt notched her first career goal on her only shot coming off the bench. Junior goalkeeper Mimi Borkan (Medfield, Mass.) totaled five saves on the afternoon.
The Bobcats edged out the Wildcats in shots (11-10) and corner kicks (4-1) but New Hampshire made use of their chances.
Quinnipiac's goal was scored by midfielder Jess Fontaine. Both midfielder Jess Gargan and defenseman Ashley Wendland were given assists on the play. Gargan led the Bobcats with four shots.
The Wildcats struck first in the eighth minute of the game. Murray dished a pass to Murphy at the top of the box where she striked the ball past Quinnipiac goalkeeper Natalia Grodzki, who finished with three saves.
Both teams had scoring chances in the remainder of the opening frame, including a Murphy shot that hit crossbar in the 43rd minute to close out the Wildcat opportunities at halftime.
In the second half (57th minute), the Wildcats wasted no time in securing another goal. Murphy placed a free kick on net that ricocheted off Grodzki as UNH's Pratt corralled the loose ball and scored from inside the box to increase the lead to two.
Quinnipiac battled for a goal of their own in the 71st minute. Gargan dished a free kick to Wendland at the top of the box who chipped the ball to Fontaine who placed a header past Borkan to reduce the deficit to 2-1.
The last attempt for Quinnipiac to send the game into extra time was in the 88th minute when Gargan ripped one just high over the Wildcat goal.
New Hampshire continues play at the TD Bank Classic on Sunday, Sept. 6 (11 a.m.) against first-time opponent Kent State University.
