BURLINGTON, Vt. – Sophomore Brooke Murphy (Monson, Mass.) scored the equalizer as the University of New Hampshire women's soccer team drew a 1-1 tie with Kent State University Sunday afternoon at Virtue Field on the University of Vermont campus.
New Hampshire holds a 2-1-3 overall record with four non-conference games remaining. Kent St. stands at 1-2-2. The 'Cats were unbeaten throughout the tournament.
Murphy finished the game with a goal on six shots and senior Caroline Murray (New Canaan, Conn.) recorded an assist on the game-tying tally. Junior Mimi Borkan (Medfield, Mass.) totaled five saves on the afternoon.
Kent State goalkeeper Ashleah McDonald recorded 10 saves in the game, including four in the extra time periods. Forward Doni Capehart scored her goal on three shots while forward Jenna Hellstrom notched an assist with two shots.
UNH outshot Kent St. 7-5 and held a 5-2 corner kick advantage in the opening half, but was held scoreless at halftime.
The second half scoring began when the Golden Flashes' Hellstrom dished a through pass to Capeheart who finished past Borkan inside the far post to go up one in the 48th minute.
UNH would respond.
In the 69th minute, freshman Gaby Dorsey (Hubertus, Wis.) intercepted a pass in the Kent St. zone. Murray picked up the loose ball and fed it to Murphy who played it right back to the senior. After dribbling around defenders Murray crossed the ball into the box, right onto the feet of Murphy who finished top left over the goalkeeper's shoulder for her fourth goal of the season.
Kent St. nearly pulled ahead in the 80th minute on a Cassandra Sauter shot from just outside the box but the attempt was punched over the goal by Borkan. No more shots were taken in the final 10 minutes of the second half.
Murphy started the first overtime period with a shot from 20 yards out that nearly hit the crossbar. With minutes remaining in the final extra time frame, senior Gabrielle Sloan (Stow, Mass.) shot the potential game winner just wide from inside the box.
The 'Cats held a 6-2 shots advantage in overtime.
New Hampshire returns home to face Temple University on Friday, Sept. 11 (7 p.m.) to begin a two-game home stand.
