BOSTON – Amy Schlagel (Blaine, Minn.) and Amy Boucher (Edmonton, Alberta) recorded two points apiece but the University of New Hampshire women's ice hockey team was defeated 5-2 by No. 6/5 Northeastern University at Matthews Arena on Friday night.
UNH is now 10-17-1 overall and 7-11-0 in Hockey East. NU won its 12th consecutive game to improve to 23-4-1, 18-2-0. The Huskies recorded double-digit shots all three periods to finish with a 34-21 advantage.
The Wildcats return to action Feb. 5 (7 p.m.) at home against the University of Vermont. Tickets for that game and all women's hockey home games are available online at www.unhwildcats.com or by calling (603) 862-4000.
Schlagel recorded a career-high two assists to match her personal best of two points. Boucher extended her point streak to six games with a goal and an assist. Jonna Curtis (Elk River, Minn.) scored her team-leading 14th goal of the season and Sara Carlson (Hutchinson, Minn.) tallied an assist.
Kyra Smith (Littleton, Colo.), the reigning Hockey East Rookie of the Week, made 10 saves in the first and third period as part of a 29-save effort. NU counterpart Brittany Bugalski stopped 19 shots. The Huskies were led offensively by McKenna Brand (two goals), Kendall Coyne (1g, 1a), Lauren Kelly (1g, 1a), Jordan Krause (2a) and Paige Savage (2a).
The Huskies quickly took a 1-0 lead by scoring on their first shot 32 seconds into the game when Savage, on the right wing, found Brand alone in the slot and she wristed a shot into the upper-left corner of the cage. Kelly was also credited with an assist.
Northeastern went on the power play at 6:15 but UNH's penalty kill surrendered just one shot and Smith turned that one aside to keep the 'Cats within one goal.
In the 11th minute, Cassandra Vilgrain (Calgary, Alberta) corralled a loose puck in the neutral zone and entered the offensive zone in the high slot and slipped a pass to the right, where Curtis skated onto the puck and fired a shot on goal controlled by Bugalski.
UNH went on a 5-on-3 power play when the home team was whistled for penalties at 11:16 and 11:51, and the Wildcats took advantage of the two-skater advantage to tie the score, 1-1, at 12:00. Schlagel moved the puck from the right point to Carlson up top, who in turn found Boucher low on the right side and her shot trickled into the goal.
The 'Cats continued to press on the extended power play, as Vilgrain's one-timer from the slot sailed wide right. Moments later, Taylor Wenczkowski (Rochester, N.H.) ripped a shot from the top of the left circle that Bugalski stopped.
NU regained the lead, 2-1, at 17:31 when Coyne shoveled a backhander from the top, inner-part of the left circle inside the far post. The home team took that one-goal lead and 12-8 shot advantage into the first intermission.
Both teams scored a goal in the second stanza. New Hampshire once again leveled the score, 2-2, on Curtis' power-play goal at 11:01. Carlson initiated the scoring sequence with a pass from the high slot to Schlagel low on the right side. Her centering pass deflected off Boucher and continued across the slot to Curtis on the left doorstep, who jammed the puck into the net.
The Huskies responded with Kelly's goal 84 seconds later to go back in front, 3-2.
NU's Tori Hickel was sent to the penalty box for a pair of minor penalties at 14:33. Less than 30 seconds later, Curtis nearly tied the game when her shot from deep in the left circle ricocheted off the near post. In the second of the consecutive power plays, Jenna Rheault (Deering, N.H.) blasted a screened shot from the right point that Bugalski stopped, and then the goalie lunged forward to cover the puck with Boucher lurking on the doorstep.
Off the ensuing faceoff, NU's Denisa Krizova led a 2-on-1 shorthanded rush down the right wing. Marie-Jo Pelletier (Dalhousie, New Brunswick) sped back into position to take away the passing lane to Coyne and force Krizova into a shot easily stopped by Smith.
Northeastern opened the third period with 1:54 remaining on a power play, but Smith stopped all three shots she faced in that shorthanded situation – including Kelly's slap shot through traffic from the left point – to keep UNH within 3-2.
Smith made another outstanding save in the fourth minute when Hayley Scamurra corralled a loose puck behind the defense in the right circle, turned and quickly fired a shot on goal.
The Huskies potted goals 89 seconds apart to quickly build a 5-2 advantage. Krizova utilized her reach to sweep a shot from the slot into the net at 5:41 and Brand's one-timer from between the hashmarks in the slot sailed inside the right post at 7:10.
In the eighth minute, Pelletier's shot from the left point deflected off an NU skater and caromed off the crossbar. Moments later, Scamurra sped down the left wing and fired a shot from the faceoff dot that Smith directed away with her blocker.
UNH recorded two shots on scoreless power plays at 10:45 and 14:06 to finish the game 2-for-7 with the skater advantage. The Wildcats' penalty kill was a perfect 3-for-3 with four shots allowed.
